Symbol Technologies Inc. was an American manufacturer of devices for mobile data collection founded in 1973 with headquarters in Holtsville, New York . The main products include barcode scanners , RFID and wireless LAN products. The German branch Symbol Technologies GmbH & Co. KG was located in Dietzenbach (Hesse).

In September 2006, Motorola announced its acquisition of Symbol Technologies, which was completed on January 9, 2007. Motorola paid $ 3.9 billion for this . The company itself had around 5,200 employees on February 28, 2006, 2,400 of them in the United States.

Symbol Technologies has been part of Motorola Solutions since 2011 and part of the Enterprise division there. In October 2014, Motorola Solutions sold its entire enterprise division with the Symbol and Psion brands to Zebra Technologies .

The 2D barcode standard PDF417 was developed in 1991 by Symbol Technologies.
