history

Motorola Solutions can look back on over 90 years of company history. Motorola Solutions' origins go back to 1928 when brothers Paul V and Joseph Galvin founded the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago.

In 1930 the company launched the “Motorola” car radio, one of the first commercially successful devices of this type. The name "Motorola" - a word creation from "Motor" for motor car and "Ola" for sound, representative of sounds in motion - ultimately became the name for the new Motorola brand. In 1943 Motorola presented the world's first portable FM radio with the SCR300. With a weight of 15.9 kilograms and a range of 16 to 32 kilometers, the radio carried as a backpack became the basic equipment of the US Army Signal Corps.

In 1968 Motorola opened its first German location in Wiesbaden. In the following year Motorola accompanied one of the most groundbreaking events of the 20th century: In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon, and a Motorola radio transponder not only transmitted the first words to earth, but also telemetry and tracking data as well as TV Signals.

Another new development from Motorola was the DynaTAC mobile phone, which was produced and functional as early as 1973. However, the entire communication infrastructure still had to be created, which could be scaled for hundreds or thousands of calls in limited frequency ranges. The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was finally certified in 1983 as the world's first commercial mobile phone.

In 1995, Motorola introduced the world's first two-way pager that allowed users to receive text messages, email, and send standard replies. In 2012, Motorola Solutions launched the LEX700, the world's first LTE handheld for security agencies. The global 3.5 millionth TETRA digital radio was delivered in 2017.

Motorola Solutions emerged in 2011 from the split from Motorola. While the government and corporate customer business remained with Motorola Solutions, the former mobile communications division was bundled in Motorola Mobility. Legally, Motorola Solutions is the direct successor to Motorola.
