The 1976/77 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 17th edition of the European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 33 club teams from 32 countries took part, including the defending champion and again Belgian cup winners RSC Anderlecht, another 25 national cup winners and seven defeated cup finalists (Aris Bonneweg, Roda JC Kerkrade, Servette Geneva, Lierse SK, CSU Galați, Heart of Midlothian and MTK-VM SK Budapest). Albania did not provide a team again.

From Germany were DFB Cup winners Hamburger SV , from the GDR FDGB Cup winners 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , from Austria ÖFB Cup winners SK Rapid Wien and from Switzerland Cup finalist Servette Geneva .

Defending champion RSC Anderlecht reached the final again in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, but lost to Hamburger SV with 0: 2.

The top scorer was the Bulgarian Kiril Milanow from DFS Levski-Spartak Sofia with a total of 13 goals, the second highest number in the history of the competition.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.

The RSC opened the encounter with quick counter attacks from a deeply staggered defense. His midfielders pushed into the top several times, who worked several good scoring opportunities up to the 25th minute. Kargus had several hard shots to parry, a 18-yard shot from Dockx hit the post. As the game progressed, however, HSV managed to limit the danger of the RSC midfield axis, and the Hamburg team had good chances to score. In midfield, Hamburg's Magath became the driver of the game, he ensured speed and moments of surprise, from which the winger Steffenhagen and Volkert in particular benefited. This made the game of Hamburg more offensively happy and lively. The Anderlecht defense got more and more into trouble, also because Libero Vandendaele was not up to the pace of the game. Although both teams were offensive, the game remained goalless until half-time. After the restart, HSV remained the dominant team, while the game of RSC Anderlecht seemed tense. Despite the superiority of Hamburger SV, it took until the 82nd minute before the first goal was scored. Right outside Arno Steffenhagen could only be slowed down by a foul in the penalty area after a remarkable solo run by Coeck. After deceiving goalkeeper Ruiter, Georg Volkert turned the penalty kick into the right corner of the goal with a placed shot. RSC coach Goethals then tried to give his team new impetus by changing van Poucke for Dockx, which then went unconditionally on the offensive. However, Felix Magath used one of the resulting counter opportunities in the 90th minute to make the final decision by converting a skillfully played pass from Volkert to the decisive 2-0 for HSV.
