Erwin Vandendaele (born March 5, 1945 in Metz , France ) is a former Belgian football player and coach .
Career
society
Vandendaele was born in 1945 in Metz, France, to a Belgian woman and a German soldier who died in World War II . After the war he moved with his mother to Gavere , where he grew up with his grandparents.
There he started playing football for RC Gavere at the age of nine . In 1964 he moved to Club Bruges , with whom he won the Belgian Cup in 1968 and 1970 . In the meantime, the former midfielder Vandendaele was mainly used as a libero . In 1971 he was awarded the Golden Shoe as the second player for Club Bruges after goalkeeper Fernand Boone . After the championship in 1973, coach Leo Canjels left the club after falling out with the board. After interim coach Jaak de Wit was dismissed at the beginning of 1974, Club Brugge presented the successful Austrian coach Ernst Happel as the new head coach. Since Vandendaele no longer played a role in Happels concept, he left the club like his teammates Johan Devrindt and Pierre Carteus .
The then president of RSC Anderlecht , Constant Vanden Stock , brought Vandendaele to the capital club. There and in the Belgian national team , he formed the defense line together with Gilbert Van Binst and Hugo Broos as well as Jean Thissen, who was committed by Standard Liège . In 1975 and 1976 he also won the Belgian Cup with Anderlecht. In 1976 and 1977 Anderlecht reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup . In 1976 he fell out for the final against West Ham United due to an injury. In the following season he led his club in the final against Hamburger SV as team captain on the field. Anderlecht lost 2-0 and missed their title defense.
After the lost final, the now 32-year-old Vandendaele moved to Stade Reims in France. After only a year he returned to Belgium, where he joined the second division club KAA Gent . From 1980 he played another year for US Tournaisienne , where he ended his active career as a player.
Coaching career
At Tournaisienne continued his career as a coach after the end of his active career. As a trainer, he returned to KAA Gent twice for short periods in the 1980s , where he also worked as a scout from 2005.
National team
At the World Cup in Mexico in 1970 he was in the Belgian squad, but was not used in the course of the tournament. Two years later he played both finals at the 1972 European Championship in his own country in the semi-finals against the Federal Republic of Germany and in the game for third place against Hungary .
Vandendaele completed a total of 32 games for the Belgian national team between 1970 and 1978 . He scored his only international goal in 1971 in a friendly against Luxembourg .
