Career

society

Thissen began playing football in the youth of his home club, FC Ensival. In 1964 he started his professional career when he switched to Standard Liège . There he formed a stable defensive line as a left-back together with players like Jacques Beurlet , Nicolas Dewalque and Léon Jeck . In 1966 and 1967 he won the Belgian Cup with Standard , although he only played in the 1967 final. From 1969 to 1971 he was Belgian champion three times in a row .

The then president of RSC Anderlecht , Constant Vanden Stock , brought Thissen and Erwin Vandendaele from Club Bruges to the capital club in 1974. Both players already formed the defensive line in the Belgian national team together with the Anderlechter Gilbert Van Binst and Hugo Broos . He also won the Belgian Cup with Anderlecht in 1975 and 1976. Between 1976 and 1978 he reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup three times in a row . In the 0-1 defeat in the opening game of the first round of the 1975/76 season against Rapid Bucharest Thissen underwent a game-winning own goal. Anderlecht prevailed in the further course of the competition and beat West Ham United 4-2 in the final . In the following season Anderlecht reached the final again as defending champion , but lost to Hamburger SV there with 0-2. The violet-whites won their third finals in a row in 1978 with a 4-0 win against Austria Wien . Thissen was on the field in all three finals.

After Anderlecht wanted to extend the expiring contract with Thissen for just one year in 1979, he moved to the RCS Verviétois in Verviers , where his birthplace was incorporated in 1977. There he ended his playing career.

Coaching career

After Thissen had already acted as player-coach at RCS Verviétois for two years, he continued his career as a coach after the end of his active career. In 1988 he was in charge of the Portuguese club SC Beira-Mar for two years . Short engagements at Servette FC in Switzerland and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise followed . From 1992 to 1994 he was the coach of the national team of Gabon . Further positions followed in North Africa and Belgium, including for a few months at his parent club Standard Liège. After taking over the club during the 1999/00 season, he was replaced at the end of the season by Tomislav Ivić . From March to September 2009 he coached the Togo national team .

National team

Thissen made his debut on January 10, 1968 in a 2-0 win over Israel for the Belgian national team . In 1970 he was in the squad for the World Cup in Mexico , where he was used in all three preliminary round games against El Salvador (3-0), the Soviet Union (1: 4) and Mexico (0: 1). Two years later, Thissen was nominated for the 1972 European Championship in his own country. He was used in both finals, in the semi-finals against the Federal Republic of Germany and in the game for third place against Hungary . On October 26, 1977 Thissen played in the World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands (0-1), his last international match for the "Red Devils".
