Royal Excelsior Virton is a Belgian football club from Virton .

history

Shortly before the First World War , the Football Club Saint-Laurent Virton was established in Virton as a local rival of Union Sportive Virtonaise . However, the war interrupted the game and the club was therefore not continued. On April 14, 1922, the Excelsior Football Club Virton was founded, which took over the club colors, green and white, of the pre-war club. In August the club became a member of the Belgian Federation .

In 1924, when he won the Ardennes Cup, his first success was achieved. A year later, a dispute between the association and local rivals Union Sportive led to a large part of the players switching to Excelsior. In the same year, the club relocated and played from then on in the "Pré Jacquet", a former marshland. In the province of Luxembourg , the association formed the top trio together with Jeunesse Arlon and Jeunesse Athus before the Second World War , which, however, was mainly dominated by Jeunesse Arlon. 1927, 1932 and 1935 Excelsior was able to win the provincial championship.

On May 21, 1945, the club resumed operations as the Excelsior Sporting Club Virton . In 1949, Excelsior won its first post-war title when the provincial cup was won. Two years later, the club received the attribute "royal" and thus traded as the Royal Excelsior Sporting Club Virton .

From 1960 Excelsior played fourth class before the club relegated in 1971. 1975 succeeded in addition to the victory in the provincial cup, the rise again. In 1986 the promotion to the third division was achieved for the first time. There the club was twelfth in their first season. After a 14th place in 1988, the club had to relegate back in 1989 as bottom of the table. In 1992 he even crashed into the fifth class provincial league, where you meet Jeunesse Arlon and Sporting Athus again. However, with 52 out of 60 possible points, the immediate re-emergence succeeds.

In the fourth division succeeded in fourth place, which entitled to participate in the promotion games to the third division. There, however, Excelsior failed to Racing Jette Wavre with a severe 0: 5 defeat. A year later, direct ascent was achieved as a master. In June 1995 the club changed its name to Royal Excelsior Virton .

In 1995/96, Excelsior finished 13th, just one point ahead of relegated FC Namur . In the following season, the club escaped the risk of relegation as eighth and was always able to place itself in the secured midfield in the following years. 1997, 1999 and 2000 each won the provincial cup. In 2001 the team was eight points ahead of Royal Francs Borains champions of the third division and thus managed direct promotion to the second division.

2002 Excelsior was eleventh in the second division. After a twelfth place in 2003, the club reached sixth place in the table in 2004. In 2005 the team was twelfth again. In 2006 she placed fourteenth, five points ahead of the relegation place occupied by KFC Dessel Sport . Since relegation in the 2015/16 season Virton played in the third-class 1st division amateurs . But four years later the return to the second class followed .

On December 4, 2019, the French Christian Bracconi was signed as the new coach.

At the end of the 2019/20 season Virton finished second in the overall table, but since the club had not won either of the two tranches, he was not qualified for the promotion games. The Belgian Football Association's license commission did not issue Virton a license for the 2020/21 season in March 2020. On March 26, 2020, the club immediately lodged a complaint with the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport. In particular, he referred to the fact that due to the COVID-19 pandemic , it is not possible to plan ahead financially for the next 18 months, as required by the license conditions. On May 12, 2020, the arbitral tribunal also refused to grant the license. Virton will thus play in the 2nd division amateurs in the 2020/21 season. Virton filed a lawsuit against the denial of the license in the civil court of first instance for Brussels because the club believes that the competition rules have been violated. He has also brought in the Belgian competition authority. On June 29, 2020, this refused to issue temporary orders. In the licensing process, Virton was offered several options for obtaining the license, such as a bank guarantee. The club did not use this.
