from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Prize of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is named after the mathematician Sofja Kovalevskaja (1850–1891) and has been awarded every two years by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation since 2002 .

The prize is endowed with up to 1.65 million euros (1.2 million euros up to 2006) and is the third highest-endowed German research prize after the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize . The prize money is used to set up a research group at a German research institute or university and is to be used on a project basis within six years.

The prize is awarded to foreign scientists or to German scientists doing research abroad. Around a third of the award winners are Germans who will be brought back to Germany with the award.
