In 1846 the Pommritz station was opened on the line from Bautzen to Görlitz. This also accelerated local development. In the 1860s, the agricultural experimental station in Upper Lusatia was relocated from Weidlitz to Pommritz ( Pommritz Manor ), whose directors in the following years included Eduard Heiden , Gustav Loges and Georg Derlitzki . It is still operated today by the Free State of Saxony.

Until 1993, the place formed an independent rural community with the districts of Wawitz (since 1936) and Rodewitz (since 1965). Then the communities of Plotzen and Pommritz were merged with the community of Hochkirch.

population

Until the 1920s, Pommritz recorded steadily increasing population numbers, from 141 inhabitants in 1834 to 179 inhabitants in 1890 to 253 inhabitants in 1925. Due to the incorporation and the acceptance of refugees and displaced persons after the Second World War, the number rose to 552 at times , but has since declined. The population data from 1990 indicate 548 inhabitants for Pommritz including the incorporated Rodewitz. Since 1993 Pommritz has been counted separately again. The number of inhabitants has since moved back to around 210 at the same level as 100 years earlier.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 177 inhabitants in the 1880s; 145 of them were Sorbs (82%) and 32 Germans. By 1956, the proportion of Sorbian speakers had fallen to 21.3%, also due to the influx of German speakers. As everywhere in the Protestant part of the settlement area, the proportion of Sorbian speakers has continued to drop sharply since then.
