geography

Topographic map from 1844

After the settlement, Kohlwesa is a round village, it borders the villages Kuppritz in the west, Niethen in the north, Zschorna in the east, Breitendorf in the southeast and Plotzen in the south.

history

In 1377 the place was mentioned as Colwaz, later Kolewachs (1399), Kolewass (1437) or Cohlwese or Kollwäse (1640). In the 18th century the current name prevails. Although the place was dependent on the manors of the neighboring villages, a relatively independent peasant class still prevailed. The location on the Kotitzer Wasser also enabled two mills to work.

population

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 233 in the 1880s, including 210 Sorbs (90%) and 23 Germans. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik still counted a Sorbian-speaking proportion of only 31.4% of the population in the municipality of Kohlwesa. Since then, the use of Sorbian has continued to decline in the village.

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the population was around 200. After the Second World War, the number rose temporarily to 254 due to the admission of refugees and displaced persons , but has since declined again and has been around 120 since 2000 and around 110 since 2009.

Most of the believing population is Evangelical Lutheran . The place is parish to Hochkirch.
