Niethen , in Sorbian Něćin ? / i , is a village in the east of the Saxon district of Bautzen , which belongs to the municipality of Hochkirch . It is part of the official Sorbian settlement area in Upper Lusatia . Audio file / audio sample

geography

The place is about 2.3 kilometers northeast of the community center Hochkirch at 210 meters above sea level on the Kuppritzer water. A little to the south and above the settlement is the Niethener Gut. The neighboring towns are Rodewitz in the northwest, Kohlwesa in the southeast, Pommritz in the southwest and Wawitz in the west.

After the settlement, Niethen is a manor settlement.

A little south of Niethen on the Kuppritzer Wasser there is a well-preserved ski jumping facility, which is one of the largest in Upper Lusatia.

In 1338 a Conradus Nydener is mentioned and a short time later the place name Nyten (1370), later also Nethen (1424) or Nytthen (1545).

Until April 1, 1935, Niethen was an independent rural community; then it was incorporated first to Rodewitz and in 1965 together with this to Pommritz. Since 1993 the place belongs to the municipality of Hochkirch.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 125 inhabitants for the place in the 1880s; 104 of them were Sorbs (83%) and 21 Germans. Since then, the proportion of Sorbian speakers has fallen sharply.

Until 1935 fluctuating population numbers are recorded for Niethen, from 147 in 1871 to 75 in 1910. After that, the place is counted together with Rodewitz. Niethen has been counted separately again since 1993, and the number of inhabitants has remained stable at around 60 since then.

The majority of the devout residents are Evangelical Lutheran. The place is parish to Hochkirch.
