Rodewitz , in Sorbian , is a village in the east of the Saxon district of Bautzen , which belongs to the municipality of Hochkirch . It is part of the official Sorbian settlement area in Upper Lusatia .
geography
The place is located three kilometers north of the Hochkirch community center at 216 meters above sea level. The neighboring towns are Niethen in the south and Wawitz in the west. The old Windmühlenberg rises in the western part of the village.
After the settlement, Rodewitz is an extended hamlet.
history
In 1232 a Gevehardus et Luderus frater eius de Rodeswiz is mentioned, in 1391 the place itself is called Rodewicz. The place name indicates a plant as a clearing settlement . Rodewitz served as a base for Frederick II of Prussia during the Battle of Hochkirch in 1758.
Until 1965 Rodewitz was an independent rural community, since 1935 with the district Niethen. Then it was first incorporated into Pommritz ; In 1993 both places came to Hochkirch.
population
For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 226 inhabitants for the place in the 1880s; 195 of them were Sorbs (86%) and 31 were Germans. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking share of only 23.9% of the population in the Rodewitz community. Since then, the proportion of Sorbian speakers has continued to decline sharply.
By 1935, Rodewitz had around 190 residents. With the incorporation of Niethen and the admission of refugees and displaced persons after the Second World War, the number rose to 383 at times. Since the 1990s, the districts have been counted separately again. The population of Rodewitz has been decreasing from around 170 in the 1990s to around 130 in the late 2000s.
The majority of the devout residents are Evangelical Lutheran. The place has been parish to Hochkirch since the 16th century.
