European Cup Winners' Cup 1971/72

The 1972/73 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 13th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 32 club teams took part, including 11 defeated cup finalists (KS Besa Kavaja, Standard Liège, Slavia Sofia, SEC Bastia, Fremad Amager, FC Den Haag-ADO, Fredrikstad FK, Legia Warsaw, Sporting Lisbon, Hibernian Edinburgh and Pezoporikos Larnaka). Defending champion Glasgow Rangers was suspended for one year for the entire European Cup due to the events in the stands and after serious fan riots in the vicinity of last season's final and was therefore unable to defend his title.

From Germany the DFB Cup winners FC Schalke 04 , from the GDR the FDGB Cup winners FC Carl Zeiss Jena , from Austria ÖFB Cup winners SK Rapid Wien and from Switzerland FC Zurich were at the start.

The top scorer was Luciano Chiarugi from AC Milan with 7 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
