Gordon McQueen (born June 26, 1952 in Kilbirnie ) is a former Scottish football player .

Player career

In his school days he was initially a goalkeeper before he was converted into a defender . His career began with the Scottish club FC St. Mirren . The talent scouts quickly recognized the qualities of the giant and in 1973 he moved to Leeds United , where he was built up as the successor to Jack Charlton . A year later he had made his breakthrough at Leeds and won the championship with this team at the same time. He made an ideal couple with Norman Hunter . For Leeds, he played a total of 171 league games in which he scored 19 goals.

But in the following years he was a "bank" at Leeds, but the team no longer played so well. In the Scottish national team, however, things did not go perfectly for McQueen. Although he came to a total of 30 international matches (5 goals) in the years 1975 to 1981 and was also part of the team at the 1974 and 1978 World Championships, he was not used for a minute in the championships.

After the World Cup in Argentina, he decided to accept an offer from Manchester United , Leeds United's declared enemy. With this club he celebrated various successes. So he and his team won the 1983 cup in the final against Brighton & Hove Albion . In 1985, at the age of 33, he ended his active career. He had played 184 games (20 goals) for ManUnited.

He later coached the second team of Middlesbrough FC , but without setting any noteworthy accents as a coach. Most recently he was employed by the television company Sky Sports .
