Player career

Leeds United and Nottingham Forest

Frank Gray started his playing career in 1972 with the English first division club Leeds United, which was coached by Don Revie . His club was one of the top clubs in the First Division at that time . His older brother Eddie Gray had been with United since 1965. Due to the injury-related loss of Terry Cooper , he quickly came to his first missions, but could not win a regular place in the team. Leeds reached the FA Cup final in 1973 , but lost it 1-0 to Sunderland AFC . There was another final defeat in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972/73 , when Gray and his team lost 1-0 to the Italian cup winners AC Milan in the Kaftanzoglio Stadium . The following season Leeds secured the championship title in the Football League First Division 1973/74 with five points ahead of defending champions Liverpool . Gray was only used sporadically over the course of the season. At the beginning of the 1974/75 season , Brian Clough replaced Revie as coach of Leeds, who then coached the English national team. Clough was fired after only 44 turbulent days and replaced by Jimmy Armfield . With him United reached the final of the European Cup 1974/75 . As in 1973, the team lost an international cup final, this time 2-0 to Bayern . In the following years, the team could not build on the successful previous seasons.

In 1979 he moved to Nottingham Forest , who have been coached by Gray's former coach Brian Clough since 1975 . As the defending champion, Forest played in the 1979/80 European Cup and defended his title at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu by beating Hamburger SV 1-0 .

In 1981 Frank Gray returned to Leeds United and rose with his team immediately from the Football League First Division 1981/82 . At the beginning of the new second division season, his brother Eddie took over the coaching post. With him, however, United did not return to the First Division until 1985. Together with his brother, Frank Gray then left the club and moved to Sunderland AFC . His new club only played in the Second Division , since Sunderland was relegated from the first division in 1985 . In the 1986/87 season, he was even relegated to the Third Division. In the following year, however, the team around Frank Gray reached the direct return to the second division through the third division championship.

In 1989, the last club change to lower-class Darlington FC followed , where he ended his playing career in 1992.

Scottish national football team

Frank Gray made his debut for the Scottish national team on April 7, 1976 , but missed a nomination for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. For this he took part in the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 and played all three preliminary round matches before his team had to travel home. 1983 ended his career in the national team after 32 games (1 goal).
