Terence "Terry" Cooper (born July 12, 1944 in Brotherton ) is a former English football player and coach . The tech-savvy left defender was with Leeds United in the 1960s and 1970s and made 20 international matches for England's national football team between 1969 and 1974 .
Athletic career
In his youth, Cooper was not discovered using the conventional method, i.e. a sighting system. He introduced himself to Leeds United to ask for a trial session. The result was so satisfactory for the club that Cooper was offered a junior player contract.
Previously in the left winger position , he was trained as a defensive player by Don Revie since signing at the age of 17. Over the course of the first six years he developed gradually and became a regular player under Revie in 1966. Cooper established himself from then on and supported winger Eddie Gray through offensive actions due to his pronounced fitness .
In 1968 Cooper won the League Cup with Leeds and scored the decisive goal in the 1-0 win against Arsenal FC at Wembley Stadium after he shot a corner kick that was only weakly blocked by Arsenal's defense, with Arsenal claiming that that Jack Charlton's own goalkeeper was fouled.
In the following year 1969 Leeds was able to win the English championship with Cooper, with Revie dispensing with a double occupation on the left defensive position and in the event of an injury or suspension of Cooper resorting to Paul Madeley , which was a clear sign of the regular player property Cooper. In the same season, Cooper made his debut under Alf Ramsey in the English national team and introduced himself with a good performance in the 5-0 win against France .
Leeds fought for the title in three competitions in 1970, but won none when they lost the English championship to Everton on the last day of the game and were defeated by the Scottish champions Celtic Glasgow in the semi-finals of the European Cup . Cooper was part of the team during these defeats and also played in the FA Cup final against Chelsea , which Leeds lost 2-1 in the replay. During the subsequent World Cup in Mexico in 1970 , however, Cooper was able to draw attention to himself again with good performances as a regular player in the left defensive position and played continuously until the quarter-final defeat against Germany .
Leeds won the trade fair cup again in 1971, but lost the English championship again on the final day of the game and was defeated 3-2 in one of the biggest surprises in FA Cup history by the lower-class Colchester United in the fifth round. Cooper missed only one league game during the entire season.
Cooper also fought for several titles with Leeds in the 1971/72 season before a broken leg in April 1972 during a championship game at Stoke City forced him to take a 20-month hiatus. This meant that Cooper could not participate in the final victory in the FA Cup against Arsenal London and ended his national team career for the time being. After Revie found no adequate replacement for the Cooper position in Madeley, Leeds bought Trevor Cherry as a permanent replacement in the summer of 1972 . Cooper also missed the final defeats in the FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup when Leeds lost to Sunderland FC and AC Milan . Cooper returned during the 1973/74 season but only played in one encounter when Leeds won the English Championship with a run of 29 games without loss.
However, once Cooper got over his injury, his time in Leeds was drawing to a close. Both the engagement of Revies as England coach in 1974 and the appearance of Frank Gray , younger brother of Eddie Gray , in the season caused Cooper to leave Middlesbrough FC after the club slowly entered the season due to the additional presence of Cherry Years ago players lost in a last big final in the European Cup against Bayern Munich . Middlesbrough was coached by former teammate Coopers Charlton at the time.
After his long-term injury, Cooper surprised him by playing football for many years. After three injury-free years at Middlesbrough, Cooper moved to Bristol City for a year before becoming player-coach for the Bristol Rovers . He was then a cotrainer and player for the Doncaster Rovers , who were looked after by his former teammate and team captain Billy Bremner . He then moved again as a player-coach to Bristol City. Cooper then coached the Exeter City club , which was followed by a commitment to Birmingham City before returning to Exeter. Today Cooper is a Scout for Southampton FC .
Cooper's son Mark was also a soccer player in the 1980s and was active in the lower professional leagues. Then he also took up the coaching activity.
