Trevor John Cherry (born February 23, 1948 in Huddersfield , † April 29, 2020 ) was an English football player and coach . He was active in the 1970s as a defender at Leeds United and completed a total of 27 international matches for the English national football team between 1976 and 1980 . He was also in the squad for the 1980 European Championship in Italy .

Athletic career

Cherry joined his hometown club Huddersfield Town in 1965 at the age of 17 after being spotted in a selection for the local Christian youth organization YMCA . He quickly established himself as a flexible player who could be used in a variety of different defensive positions. In 1970 he was promoted to the English first division by winning the second division championship.

For a transfer fee of 100,000 pounds, Cherry then moved to Leeds United in 1972, where the local coach Don Revie needed a replacement for the aging Jack Charlton . Cherry then played in his first season both together with and instead of Charlton, but was mostly used as a left defender, as Terry Cooper , who was injured for a long time due to a broken leg, prevented other defensive line-ups. At the end of the season, Cherry's stakes totaled 38 and he was also called up by Revie for the final of the FA Cup .

The only player in the entire eleven, Cherry hadn't won the Cup against Arsenal a year earlier , but although Cherry lost that game with Leeds, he was one of the few players on his team to perform well. Cherry was involved in many offensive actions in the game, including a very spectacular scene at Wembley . When Leeds were 1-0 down against Sunderland in the middle of the second half, Cherry sprinted a long cross from Paul Reaney and failed with his diving header at Sunderland goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery , with the blocked ball falling into the path of Leeds player Peter Lorimer , whose margin was then parried again with a quick reflex by Montgomery, who with this performance became a crowd favorite in Sunderland. Cherry should not be able to win the FA Cup in his further career either.

He won his first English championship with Leeds in 1974, when the team remained unbeaten in 29 consecutive games since the start of the season. Also in this season, Cherry was mostly used as a left defender.

1975 was a mixed year for Cherry at first. An injury meant that he could not play in about half of the matches, but was able to play in time for the semi-finals in the European Cup against FC Barcelona . Cherry played directly against Johan Cruyff in both games and helped that Cruyff could not develop his game. Leeds then reached the final against Bayern Munich , in which Cherry was not nominated by coach Jimmy Armfield , as he had previously had to suspend several league games due to a long suspension. Leeds lost the final in Paris 2-0.

Cherry took over the role of team captain in 1976 after Billy Bremner left the club. In addition, Cherry was used for the first time in the English national team . The club Leeds United itself, however, went through a difficult time due to numerous departures and aging players and this meant that Leeds could no longer play a major role in any competition.

Cherry received his first (but unjustified) red card in an international match in the game against Argentina in 1977, although Cherry lost two teeth when he was hit in the face by an Argentine player. He continued his international career even though England failed to qualify for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina .

When England qualified for a major tournament for the first time in ten years in 1980, Cherry was in the 22-man squad for the 1980 European Championship in Italy . However, his contribution was only small, as he was only substituted in the group stage against Spain , with England being eliminated from the competition after the group ended.

Cherry continued to play for Leeds until 1982 when the club had to go to the second division with Huddersfield Town under the direction of Cherry's former teammate Allan Clarke and exactly ten years after Cherry's relegation. Cherry played three months in the second division and then moved to the neighboring club Bradford City , where he worked as a player- coach.

After a year, Cherry ended his playing career in order to concentrate fully on coaching. Cherry continued to coach during the Bradford disaster on May 11, 1985, when 56 people were killed in the stadium's promotion to second division celebrations.

Only a year later, Cherry completely retired from his coaching work and from football in general. He ran an advertising and hospitality company in Huddersfield until his death in April 2020. He was married and had two sons.
