General George W. Casey, Jr. (2007)

George William Casey Jr. (born July 22, 1948 in Sendai , Japan ) is a former general in the US Army and was the 36th Chief of Staff of the Army from April 10, 2007 to April 11, 2011 . From October 2004 to February 10, 2007, he was also the commander of the coalition forces in Iraq ( Multi-National Force Iraq ).

Origin and education

Casey is the son of General George William Casey Sr., who was killed in a helicopter crash in 1970 as the commander of the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. Casey grew up where his father was stationed in Germany and the USA. He went to Boston College High School in Dorchester, Massachusetts , earned a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in 1970 , and a master's degree from the University of Denver Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 1980, respectively in International Relations . While studying in Washington, he also received officer training at the ROTC .

Military career

He served u. a. from 1995 to 1996 as Chief of Staff of the 5th US Corps , 7th US Army / US Army Europe , from 1999 to 2001 as Commanding General of the 1st US Armored Division . He was also in Yugoslavia in 1996/97 as part of IFOR . From 2001 to 2003 he was the Director of Strategic Planning and Policies ( J-5 ) of the Joint Staff . After this assignment, he served from 2003 to June 2004 as Deputy Chief of Staff of the US Army . In October 2004, the Multi-National Force Iraq (MNF-I) was finally subordinated to him, after he had taken over this command provisionally from Ricardo S. Sánchez in July . In January 2007, it was announced that David Petraeus Casey would follow the post of commander of the MNF-I. After confirmation by the Armed Services Committee , Casey handed over command to Petraeus on February 10, 2007.

On April 10, 2007, Casey took over the post of 36th Chief of Staff of the Army from Peter Schoomaker in Washington, DC .

On April 11, 2011, he passed the service to Martin Dempsey at Fort Myer Military Base, Virginia and was retired the same day.
