Ralph Edward Haines, Jr. (born August 21, 1913 in Fort Mott , Salem County , New Jersey ; † November 23, 2011 in San Antonio , Bexar County , Texas ) was an American general in the US Army who served, among other things, between 1967 and 1968 Vice-chief of the Army General Staff ( Vice chief of Staff of the United States Army ) , 1968-1970 commander in chief of the army units in the Pacific USARPAC ( US Army Pacific ) and most recently 1970-1973 Commanding General of the Army continental commands ( Continental Army Command ) was.

Life

Haines, son of Brigadier General Ralph Edward Haines and his wife Ethel L. Haines, began military training at the US Military Academy at West Point after attending the Texas Military Academy in San Antonio in 1930 , which he completed in 1935. At the same time he was promoted to lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) and transferred to the infantry. First he was used in Fort Bliss and then with the Philippine Scouts . In addition to other assignments as an officer, he completed courses at the Armed Forces Staff College (AFSC) in Norfolk , the US Army War College in Carlisle and at the National War College (NWC) at Fort Lesley J. McNair . In February 1962, Major General was Haines Commanding General ( Commanding General ) in Fort Hood stationed 1st Armored Division ( 1st Armored Division ) , known as "Old Ironsides," and remained until May 1963 in this use. For this he was awarded the Legion of Merit for the second time on July 17, 1963. In 1965 he was awarded the Legion of Merit for the third time due to further services. Later he was Lieutenant General between 1965 and 1967 in command of the III. US Corps ( III Corps ) and received the Legion of Merit for the fourth time for his services in this service. In 1967 he replaced General Creighton Abrams as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Army ( Vice Chief of Staff of the Army ) , and was in this capacity Deputy Chief of Staff of the United States Army , Harold Keith Johnson . In July 1968 he was followed by General Bruce Palmer as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army . For his services in this service he was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal on August 22, 1968 .

General Haines was then as the successor to General Dwight E. Beach between August 1968 and his replacement by General William B. Rosson in October 1970, Supreme Commander of the Army Units in the Pacific region USARPAC ( US Army Pacific ) at the Fort Shafter headquarters in Hawaii . Haines was married to Sally Genevieva Swift Haines and was the father of Palmer Swift Haines. He died of complications from heart failure and was the longest-living four-star general in the US Army at the time of his death at the age of 98. He was buried in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery . In his honor, the Ralph E. Haines, Jr. Award is presented annually to the best drill sergeant in the Army Reserve.
