Fort Shafter is located on the edge of Honolulu in the south of the island of Oahu , one of the eight main islands of the Hawaiian archipelago. The center and oldest part of the complex is the Palm Circle Historic District , a circular parade ground lined with palm trees , around which the main building - Richardson Hall , also known as the “ Pineapple Pentagon ” - as well as barracks and officers' quarters are arranged. Starting from Palm Circle , the remaining facilities of Fort Shafters extend over an area of around 2.5 km² in the direction of Pearl Harbor with the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, which is also located there, and today offer an infrastructure for over 5000 members of the army.

The construction of Fort Shafters began in 1905, a few years after the annexation of Hawaii by the United States in 1898 , and was part of a far-reaching construction program of the US Army on the island with the forts DeRussy and Ruger (decommissioned in 1955) planned at around the same time and the Schofield Barracks . The facilities were intended to be the first fortified structures to replace the Otis and McKinley camps that had been set up as temporary tent cities in previous years. The fort was commissioned in 1907, the name Fort Shafter goes back to William R. Shafter , a major general of the Spanish-American War , who died the year before construction was completed.

The first unit to move into quarters on June 24, 1907, was the 2nd Battalion of the 20th Infantry Regiment. Fort Shafter has been the official headquarters of the US Army Pacific and its predecessors since 1921 .

In October 1984, the Palm Circle Historic District was added to the United States ' National Register of Historic Places .
