action

Like every year, Hannes, Kiki, Michael, Mareike, Finn and Dominik go on a bike tour. This year Hannes and his wife Kiki determine where the journey will go. Starting in Frankfurt am Main, the tour should lead to the sea to Ostend in Belgium.

During the trip, the cyclists learn that it will be Hannes' last trip. He is ill with the incurable nervous disease ALS . Hannes has known about the diagnosis for a long time, but hasn't said anything because he didn't want to burden his friends with it. Marked by the course of his late father's illness, he decided to seek euthanasia in Belgium . This is met with incomprehension and the bike tour threatens to turn into a disaster.

During the journey, the friends slowly come to terms with Hannes' wish to die. Mutually set tasks and their fulfillment, e.g. B. doing a parachute jump or doing something illegal while Michael is supposed to dress up as a woman and thus meets Bine, all of this loosens the mood. But Bine notices the mood and finally disengages.
On the last part of the trip, Hannes mother's friends are driven by car, as Hannes has become weaker and weaker during the bike tour. When they arrive at their destination in Belgium, they learn that the doctor who was supposed to carry out the euthanasia had a serious accident. But even after this delay, Hannes sticks to his decision, a substitute doctor is found who will give him the injection in the presence of everyone. A year later, the friends meet on the same beach - it says “Hannes was here” in the sand.

background

Emergence

Hin und weg was created based on a script by author Ariane Schröder, who herself grew up in the German-speaking community in Belgium. The Munich University of Television and Film graduate was inspired by a dream in which she saw a sworn group of friends who were going on one last trip together. Schröder then prepared an exposé , which she told her honorary professor, director Florian Gallenberger , about. However, she was so dissatisfied with the drafting that she immediately started a script version, which she later sent to Gallenberger. After reading it, he confirmed that he was ready within just four hours to realize the script as a partner in the production company Majestic Film for the cinema.

Co-producer Benjamin Herrmann described Schröder's book as a "stroke of luck", which is characterized by a "successful mixture of direct humor and strong emotionality". He and Gallenberger saw international productions such as Guillaume Canet's Small True Lies (2010) and Lawrence Kasdan's Der große Frust (1983) as ideal cinematic models for the material, which also deals with serious topics, but presents them in a positive and entertaining way. The producer duo Christian Zübert , with whom Herrmann had already worked on Lammbock - Alles in Handarbeit (2001) and Dreiviertelmond (2011), was able to win over to direct .

Gallenberger and Herrmann later reported that so far they have rarely been able to get a film off the ground as quickly as there and away . It took a year to develop the script. In May 2013 the first partners and actors were approached. From the beginning, actor Florian David Fitz was Gallenberger and Herrmann's preferred candidate for the role of Hannes, who is desperately suffering from ALS. Fitz quickly expressed interest in the character and participated in the character drawing early on. At his suggestion, Julia Koschitz , with whom he had already filmed the German-Austrian doctor 's series Doctor's Diary , was offered the role of Kiki. She had worked with Schröder in the previous year at the Munich University of Television and Film as part of a staging seminar and was already familiar with the project. Jürgen Vogel gave his promise to participate in the film even before he had read the script.

Filming

The shooting was completed in Ostend, Belgium .

The filming of the road movie took place from September 17 to November 5, 2013 in the Rhine-Main area and in Ostend , Belgium . The film was largely shot chronologically. It was clear early on that Hessen would act as the location and location of the action. Herrmann, who grew up in Friedberg , Hesse , referred to ideal filming conditions on site in advance. The production filmed among others in Frankfurt am Main , Wiesbaden , Idstein , the Rheingau and the Taunus . In the Wetterau , filming was also carried out in Reichelsheim , Ober-Mörlen and Bad Nauheim , where scenes were created at Aliceplatz and in the Palatinate Court.

The production budget was around four million euros. Hin und weg received financial support from HessenInvestFilm , which contributed 800,000 euros to the project. Furthermore, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg , the German Film Funding Fund (DFFF) and the Film Funding Agency (FFA) funded the film, although their approval was only received on the last day of shooting and caused a "special risk". The project development was also funded by the EU's MEDIA program. In addition to Majestic Filmproduktion , ZDF appeared as a co-producer. Viafilm and Sky Deutschland were also involved in the production .

Film music

The composers Siggi Mueller and Egon Riedel contributed the score for the film . The associated soundtrack was put together by music consultants Klaus Frers and Thomas Binar, who invited members and management of the German band Beatsteaks and the English singer-songwriter Ryan Keen to early test screenings. After the rough cut met with positive reactions, the production got access to songs, some of which had not yet been published. In addition to the Beatsteaks and Keen, the Duo Boy and the singers Passenger , Ira May , Joyce Jonathan and James Vincent McMorrow are represented on the soundtrack.

criticism

Günter H. Jekubzik wrote on Programmkino.de that “the film that comes along with ease” does not rely on emotion, but rather celebrates the value of friendship. In this way, a sensitive topic can be dealt with "especially as an ensemble film with good, haunting characters". The songs written for the film were also praised, as they would "contribute strongly to the mood of farewell and friendship". His colleague Joachim Kurz wrote on kino-zeit.de: "With Hin und Weg, Christian Zübert has achieved an absolute rarity: German cinema that moves and makes you think, serious, but without a raised index finger, in some places funny without any silliness - Above all, however, a film with a discreetly presented message that, in addition to transitoriness, reminds us of one thing above all else: the value of friendship, which can overcome all limits of life. "

Florian David Fitz and Volker Bruch on the Hin und weg cinema tour in Dortmund in October 2014.

World editor Cosima Lutz, on the other hand, criticized the film and especially the script: “If originality of ideas is exhausted in props like an old cassette recorder, you can still bring in the subject of death to give a film a primer that simulates depth. Apart from the fact that this borders on the refusal to script and direct, last-minute hedonism has been told wiser and funnier. However, 'Hin und Weg' does not seem to want to develop its own position on the topic of euthanasia, which is worth discussing. "

Roland Müller also criticized the script and the direction in his review of the film in the Stuttgarter Zeitung . The film trivializes death and the fear of death; dying is incorporated into the “lifestyle of the fun society”. In doing so, however, Zübert missed “the chance of a serious contribution to the ethics debate” and presented a “ tragic comedy ” that was “not up to its topic”. After the fun party in the film, the wish to die of Hannes, who was ill with "ALS light", is no longer credible for the audience in the end. The lethal injection that was still administered makes the film "not only angry, but also cynical "; Hannes must die, "no matter what it costs - and be it humanity".

Thomas Vorwerk found on filmstarts.de that Zübert was trying to "visibly outgrow the German comedy recipe that has proven itself at the box office, which is partially successful". Every now and then captivates with "quiet scenes" that are "entirely in the service of the story", "while the regularly inserted humorous nuances sometimes bring a great gag, but [..] now and then also seem a bit too fabricated" . With “a strong cast, an interesting and serious topic”, Zübert managed to achieve a remarkable emancipation from the usual German comedy scheme despite “some weaknesses”.

Manfred Riepe from epd Film wrote: “Although the film hardly creates any original points of connection with the travel route, the viewer can cycle along relaxed for a while. The dramaturgy develops around a parlor game in which the protagonists complete surprising tests of courage, about which the others know nothing [...] Nothing against humorously broken grief work. But the figures rarely achieve credible depth ”. All the more surprising is “the pitch black punch” at the end of the film. Here “the film still reaches an oppressive intensity, which is unfortunately diluted with an epilogue in which the friends write“ Hannes was here ”in the sandy beach in oversized letters. Somehow the film dies for fear of death ”.

success

Auf und weg celebrated its world premiere on August 9, 2014 on the Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival . With 268,693 visitors by the end of the year, the comedy was placed 32nd among the most-watched German cinema productions of 2014. In December 2015, the production in Germany had passed the 300,000-visitor mark. The TV premiere took place on July 14, 2016 on ZDF . Over 3.68 million viewers saw the film; the market share was around 13 percent.

Awards

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the film the title “particularly valuable”. In her jury statement, she summed up that Christian Zübert succeeded in “avoiding almost all the traps of kitsch” by doing without “smooth, glossy optics and overly emotional music”. The press release praises the ensemble in particular, which appears to be “one hundred percent coordinated and harmonized”. Florian David Fitz endows Hannes with "great depth and vulnerability" and Julia Koschitz, as his wife Kiki, convinces in "her helpless grief and fear of a future without Hannes". On the one hand, the film is “honest cinema about the self-determined farewell to life”. On the other hand, it is “a hymn to friendship and the beauty that life offers every day”.

Hin und weg was nominated for the Art Cinema Award as well as for the Variety Piazza Grande Award . At the Jupiter Awards, Hin und weg entered the race with nominations in the categories “Best German Actress” and “Best German Actor”. While Fitz was able to prevail against his colleagues and won, Julia Koschitz lost to her competitor Maria Ehrich . In addition, Koschitz was nominated as “Best Actress” for the German Film Critics Award, but Laura Tonke had to admit defeat. Fitz was also nominated as “Most Popular Actor in Cinema / TV Film” at the 2015 Romy Awards for his play in Hin und weg .
