Majestic is a German film company that operates both as a film distributor and a film production company .
history
Majestic Filmproduktion GmbH and Majestic Filmverleih GmbH were founded in 2006 by the German film distributor and producer Benjamin Herrmann and media investor David Groenewold in Berlin. Groenewold's shares later took over the Odeon Film, which he controls . In 2008, Majestic Home Entertainment GmbH was founded to exploit the video rights. The distribution (cinema and video) ran through the German subsidiary of the American studio 20th Century Fox until 2019 . In 2011 Benjamin Herrmann took over 100% of the shares in the Majestic companies held by Odeon Film.
The aim in each case is to produce and distribute a few selected, demanding and commercially promising (primarily German) cinema films for a more adult audience. This strategy already worked with the first productions: The young company's first big film, Doris Dörries Kirschblüten - Hanami , became the most successful arthouse film of 2008 with over 1.1 million visitors . Philipp Stölzl's north face mountain adventure was made with two Germans Awarded film prizes and reached over 600,000 viewers in German-speaking cinemas. The production John Rabe , directed by Oscar winner Florian Gallenberger , was awarded the German Film Prize and the Bavarian Film Prize as the best film of the year, but the public interest fell short of the high expectations, not least because of an early summer. With Sherry Hormann's Desert Flower, based on the bestseller by Waris Dirie , Majestic achieved another great success, with over 1.1 million visitors and several awards, including the Bavarian Film Prize for best film. In 2010 Feo Aladağ's honor killing drama Die Fremde started , awarded the German Film Prize for Best Film and for Best Lead Actress. Die Fremde was the German candidate for the 2011 Academy Awards. Among the four films that Majestic brought to the cinema in 2011, Marcus H. Rosenmüller's Summer in Orange and Christian Zübert's Dreiviertelmond were very successful with over 560,000 and 400,000 viewers, respectively.
In the same year, Majestic co-produced and loaned Hermine Huntgeburth's film adaptation of the Mark Twain classic Tom Sawyer with Heike Makatsch and Benno Fürmann , which attracted almost 500,000 moviegoers. The sequel, The Adventures of Huck Finn , was shot right after and launched on 20 December 2012. Other theatrical releases in 2012 were Ralf Huettner quirky comedy Ironically Siberia with Joachim Król in the lead role and the generational comedy Omamamia of Tomy Wigand with Marianne Sägebrecht , Annette Frier and Miriam Stein .
The film adaptation of Charlotte Roche's scandal bestseller Wetlands , directed by David F. Wnendt , reached over a million visitors in German and Austrian cinemas in 2013.
In 2014 the self-produced tragic comedy Hin und weg started under the direction of Christian Zübert , with Florian David Fitz , Julia Koschitz , Jürgen Vogel , Miriam Stein and Hannelore Elsner in the leading roles.
The international Majestic production Colonia Dignidad - There is no turning back with Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl in the leading roles, again directed by Florian Gallenberger , premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was again awarded the Bavarian Film Prize for Best Film excellent and launched in German cinemas in 2016.
In 2017, the agent comedy Kundschafter des Friedens , Josef Haders directorial debut Wilde Maus and the documentary Embrace - You are beautiful , produced by Nora Tschirner , which advanced to the most successful event start of all time.
In 2018/19 the documentary Eldorado by More than Honey director Markus Imhoof came to the cinemas, it won't be greener, said the gardener and flew away , a majestic production by Benjamin Herrmann directed by Florian Gallenberger , as well as Rainer Kaufmann's divorce comedy Und Wer takes the dog? .
