occupation

Scouts of Peace is a German feature film by Robert Thalheim from 2017 with Henry Hübchen in the leading role. The film title is an allusion to the official name of the GDR's foreign agents .

action

The former GDR foreign agent Jochen Falk is a pensioner and is recruited by the BND because in one of the two (fictional) ex-Soviet republics of Katschekistan, which should have celebrated their reunification, the designated President Kazan and the BND agent Frank Kern were kidnapped. Not least for personal reasons - it was Kern who unmasked him 30 years ago - Falk agrees, but only on the condition that he can reactivate his old team: Along with hobbyist Jaecki, organizer Locke and the no longer very young Romeo agent However, Harry also joins BND agent Paula as a guardian. Once in Katschekistan, the aged agents have to find out that times have changed drastically and that they are now dependent on all their skills. Last but not least, the question of whether Paula is the daughter of Kern or Falk (showdown on Glienicker Bridge ) has to be clarified .

Production and shooting

With regard to the sensitive topic, producer Andreas Banz emphasized that it was important to him not to create a “Stasi glorification” or an “East-West film”, but “to make a best-ager film that deals with the universal theme of being no longer needed in old age ”.

Director Thalheim says about the film: It was clear to him that the story would only work with this cast. He wrote the role of "East James Bond" explicitly for Hübchen. The idea that the scout Falk then insists on taking old secret service buddies with him was no less important. “I'm just really happy that we actually managed to bring everyone together,” the filmmaker confessed. The result should be a cheerful "homage to the old film agent", "no over-the-top satire". The eastern quartet of actors Hübchen, Gwisdek, Thieme and Glatzeder - two went to the West during the GDR era, the others stayed in the country - he excitedly sent a quarter of a century after reunification to a cinematic BND mission.

The film was shot on various locations in Germany; the scenes in "Katschekistan" were filmed in Gran Canaria .

The title melody composed by Walter Kubiczeck from the GDR television series The Invisible Visor was integrated into the film music .

The film premiered on January 17, 2017 at the Berlin Kino International ; the official release was on January 26, 2017.

Reviews

“If you don't take the casual comedy with its [sic] (deliberately built-in) historical inaccuracies too seriously, you will experience 90 enjoyable, entertaining minutes. This is also because [sic] 'Scouts of Peace' plays with relish with agent film clichés and stereotypes and takes them on the grain with a lot of joy: from bizarre listening methods of all kinds (keyword: ashtrays) to macho behavior in the Years of top spies (womanizer Harry). "

“Amusing, gently ironic comedy that draws its humor from the gap between demands and reality of the elderly. Allusions to spy films from the 1960s and 1970s as well as actors who love to play ensure pleasant entertainment, which subliminally negotiates the serious changes for East Germans as a result of reunification.
