The nice Mr. Wong is a ZDF film that is part of the series Kommissarin Lucas . Tim Trageser directed the 2014 television film. For Ellen Lucas ( Ulrike Kriener ), her twenty-first case is about industrial espionage , drone technology and a human rights organization - the traces reach as far as China . The guest stars of this episode are Christina Große and Christoph Bach , Jakob Diehl and Benito Sambo.

action

The corpse of the owner Jian Chien is found in the development company AI DRONES after it was initially assumed that the company would only be broken into. The German managing director Jörg Albrecht fears that sensitive data has been stolen. AI Drones has specialized in the development and production of autonomous drone swarms. Thien Wong, the dead man's uncle, a high-ranking diplomat who is confronted with the obvious suspicion that it could be Chinese industrial espionage, rejects this.

Detective Chief Inspector Ellen Lucas, who is entrusted with the case, remains persistent and continues investigations in this direction. Claudia Bittner, the leading software developer at AI Drones, is suspected because the stolen data was on her computer. However, Bittner has an alibi that cannot be countered, as her partner Leon Kern confirms that she was with him at the time in question. Kern himself is also attracting attention, as Jian Chien bequeathed all of his fortune to the human rights organization Dissident's Home, which, as the name suggests, helps Chinese dissidents. Kern is related to this organization. In addition, Kern's daughter from her marriage to a Chinese woman is being held in China and politically persecuted. The question arises as to what is behind the connection between Bittner and Kern, and what kind of connections are AI Drones with the human rights organization.

Claudia Bittner seeks a conversation with Lucas, because what happened, and especially the death of Jian Chien, weighs heavily on her. When she told the inspector a fantasy story about the break-in, she said straight out how it really was, namely that her friend Leon Kern was being blackmailed by the Chinese and Kern's daughter was being used as leverage. Bittner then stated that the Chinese secret service wanted to release Kern's daughter in return for the delivery of the sensitive data. When she tells that her contact is called Thien Wong, Lucas is more than surprised. When she later asks Wong about it, he finds a flimsy explanation.

The plan is to arrest Wong if the materials he has requested are turned over to him. Because of his diplomatic status, that would lead to a political incident and Wong could then be exchanged for Kern's daughter. But then it turns out that Kern has no daughter at all and the man who calls himself Thien Wong is Gan Xu, the man with whom Chien had an appointment on the evening of his death. Lucas and her supervisor Boris Noethen learn from Peter Bahr from the Federal Intelligence Service that Gan Xu believes that his wife is still being held in China, although she has been dead for a week, which the Chinese secret service is prudently hiding from him because he remains so susceptible to blackmail . Noethen tells Lucas that if Gan Xu doesn't blackmail Kern, then it's the other way around.

In the meantime, Tom Brauer learns from an imprisoned woman that Kern did the same thing with her (it was the imprisoned sister) as he did with Bittner. When he didn't need her anymore, he wanted to poison her with champagne. At around this time, Claudia Bittner drinks the champagne that Kern has poured for her.

At this point in time, the AI Drones company includes Kern, Albrecht and Gan Xu, who is actually a dissident and computer specialist. Albrecht had made common cause with Kern, hoping to benefit considerably from it. He was also the one who immediately got his partner Jian Chien out of the way and killed him at what he thought was a good opportunity. In contrast to him, Jian Chien stood behind the human rights organization and supported it, as his will shows. After Kern has what he wants, he shoots Albrecht in cold blood. He runs after the fleeing Gan Xu with the gun. At this moment, Lucas appears on the scene, although at first it looks as if she can capture Kern. The taking off drones thwart her plans and she can now feel her own weapon on her neck. Although Gan Xu worries about his wife, he intervenes and shoots Kern with his weapon. Lucas now tells him about the death of his wife. When he said goodbye to the Commissioner some time later, as he was going to get a new identity, he thanked her, whereupon Lucas said that she had to thank him for his courage, which saved her life. Claudia Bittner's life was also saved by the courageous intervention of Commissioners Eggert and Brauer.

production

Production, publication

The nice Mr. Wong was filmed in Munich and broadcast on ZDF on September 20, 2014 in prime time. The film was first broadcast on September 17, 2014 in the ZDFneo program .

Private matters of the commissioners

Ellen Lucas invited her colleagues to a drink to thank them for their cooperation, and Rike and landlord Max also happened to enter the restaurant and they spent time together. Ellen is piqued that Rike talks about private things from her past. Rike later explains to her that she always feels so insecure and boring and then pulls on.

background

The producer Molly von Fürstenberg stated that the series Kommissarin Lucas has a “high narrative standard” and that issues with a socio-political background are repeatedly addressed that we might encounter in everyday life and that we would have to deal with. On this basis, the authors would also be selected for the script to be written. For example, Holger Karsten Schmidt took up the subject of drones, which he had previously dealt with extensively.

In an interview by Christine Strohm with the main actress Ulrike Kriener, she revealed that it was very unusual to work with drones that were not even present during the filming, but were only later integrated into the film recordings by computer. So she must have been frightened of something that wasn't there. When asked about her fourth collaboration in this series with Tim Trageser, Lucas replied that she “appreciates” him very much and thinks that he is a very “wonderful, sensitive and cheerful director” who at the same time knows exactly what he wants. When asked if she still enjoys slipping into the role of Ellen Lucas, Kriener answered with a resounding “yes”.

criticism

TV Spielfilm said, "applied a bit thick, but atmospherically dense". Conclusion: "Good perpetrator puzzle with surprising turns."

Tilmann P. Gangloff's criticism for tittelbach.tv read in the summary as follows: “Especially compared to the promising new Saturday crime series on ZDF, 'Inspector Lucas' was often only a good cut recently. Holger Karsten Schmidt could at least be won over for 'The nice Mr. Wong'. In fact, the renowned author tells an unusual story. Even if he didn't manage to give the secondary characters greater depth, Tim Trageser's well-cast crime thriller is worth seeing thanks to the many unexpected twists and turns and the careful craftsmanship. ”[…]“ The film owes its appeal above all ", So Gangloff," hit the unexpected hook that history makes.

The film service found it succinct: "Solid (television) crime thriller in series format."

The Frankfurter Neue Presse praised: "The nice Mr. Wong: Exciting until the last minute" and added, "I like it almost without restrictions." It also said: "This film from the crime series' Inspector Lucas can be cleverly nested, densely conceived and staged at high speed 'convince across the board. […] Tim Trageser's chilled staging fits in with a certain aloofness on the part of Inspector Lucas. Ulrike Kriener embodies her with economical and controlled facial expressions, which gives her high credibility in her role as a policewoman. Andreas Weidinger's music also goes very well with a crime thriller. Even if the film contains a number of tough scenes in its showdown, the crime thriller protrudes far beyond the usual TV products. The only drawback could be listed as the relatively unremarkable secondary characters. "
