occupation

Kreuzweg is a German television film by Ralf Huettner from 2016. It is the 23rd film in the ZDF film series Kommissarin Lucas .

action

During the preparations for the Regensburg Catholic Day, the friar Ernst Sandner of the Exercitus-Sanctus-Jesu Order was found slain on the cathedral square . Commissioner Ellen Lucas takes over the investigation together with Boris Noethen in the vicinity of the monastery to which the victim belonged. The research quickly revealed that the Order, headed by Brother Peter Kellermann, is currently conducting a model trial against a Swiss bank, because the German Order had speculated with money there and is now suing the Swiss.

The KTU finds traces of dextrin on the corpse and therefore Lucas fears a possible explosives attack. After a threatening mail has been received, Lucas wants to investigate the allegations against the order more closely and meets Martina Heise, who has been fighting for a long time for the Catholic Order to finally show something of its charity and to stand up for the refugees in the village. After further attack threats are received, the police have to react so as not to endanger the Kirchentag and its visitors. Boris Noethen advises against holding the opening ceremony on Domplatz and is in favor of moving it to the stadium. There is also the possibility of a disturbance here, but it is much easier to control. So far everything looks as if the murdered monk himself intended to prevent the opening of the Catholic Day. A large amount of fertilizer, which would be needed to make an explosive device, was available in the monastery nursery. Commissioner Lucas speaks to the leading friar Peter about it. At best, he considers Brother Anton to be capable of such an act, since he is an extremely deeply religious monk, downright delusional religious. He would go his way of faith over pain. Due to the unchristian speculations with the monies of the order, the church is criticized by the top church leadership, and consideration is being given to dissolving the order and thus separating church and banking business. It would be a disaster for Brother Anton because he couldn't cope with it. To be on the safe side, he is locked in his cell in the monastery. Lucas has Tom Brauer bring the monk to the station. On the way there, the policeman learns how far Brother Anton's religious madness goes. Anton seizes Tom's gun and forces him to drive his prepared explosives into town. Tom can send a message to Commissioner Lucas so that she is informed. Brother Anton has doubts and thinks he is too weak to carry out God's will further. After allowing Tom to get out of the car, he blows himself up with his homemade bomb.

Anton only wanted to save his monastery and prevent the reading of a message brought by the Pope's representative. According to Anton's understanding, Jesus also had to die before he could be recognized as God's Son. So he too had sacrificed himself in his madness.

Reviews

Harald Keller from Tittelbach.tv said: “'Way of the Cross' is a themed thriller. Religiousness, the church and faith are reflected on at various levels, and in a pleasantly unpretentious way. ”Ulrike Kriener once again gives Commissioner Lucas“ with great acting ability ”the“ brittleness and stubborn persistence resulting from the prehistory of this character . "" What is very pleasing about this episode, which is narrated in a dense and atmospheric manner as usual, is that many guest roles were cast with less prominent figures, which contributes to authenticity and credibility. "

For the Frankfurter Rundschau , Tilmann P. Gangloff said: “Faith rarely plays a role in crime series for good reason; the danger of offending religious feelings is too great. Whether the commissioners are Catholics, Protestants or atheists is almost never discussed. Unless, as in this case, it fits the plot. ”“ An unusual crime thriller which, thanks to the many recordings from the actual Catholic Day (2014), also seems very elaborate. However, it only gets really exciting at the detailed finale. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm said: "Starts solid, disappoints in the end."
