It was discovered in February 1900 during the British Southern Cross Expedition (1898-1900) under the direction of the Norwegian polar explorer Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink . He named it after the British geographer and explorer Clements Markham (1830-1916), President of the Royal Geographical Society from 1893 to 1905.
