Mario Zucchelli Station on Terra Nova Bay |
Terra Nova Bay ( English for Terra Nova Bay ) is an approximately 64 km long bay of the Ross Sea on the Scott coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land .
The often ice-free bay is located between Cape Washington and the Drygalski ice tongue . The Mario Zucchelli Station (formerly Terra Nova Bay Station ), an Italian Antarctic research station , has been located on the bay since 1985 . Another station on the bay is the German Gondwana station , which has existed since 1983 . In the bay is the uninhabited island of Inexpressible Island .
The bay was named after Robert Falcon Scott , the leader of the Discovery Expedition , which ran from 1901 to 1904 and named it after the Terra Nova , one of the expedition's two rescue ships.
