action
Georg gives his marriage to Doris the fatal blow when he starts an affair with the young doctoral student Laura. Until then, Doris and Georg were seen as a decal of a happy middle-class couple in Hamburg. Now they are - after more than a quarter of a century of marriage - with two children, house and dog in front of the broken glass of their relationship.
To Georg's chagrin, his still-wife insists on a so-called "separation therapy" in a very enlightened and civilized way. And as if that weren't bad enough, Georg's fountain of youth dries up faster than the man gets a doctor's appointment - because the young newcomer also makes demands on man and heart. While Georg's love affair mutates more and more into a disaster, Doris learns to appreciate the new freedom more and more and to enjoy her own life.

reception
criticism
Antje Wessels writes on Programmkino.de : “But“ And who takes the dog? ”Also works on another level - and only through this does the film gain heart and soul, because as good as the gags and as clever as the dialogues may be So tragic is the fact that a couple (supposedly) happily married for 26 years is standing in front of the pieces of their marriage. Author Martin Rauhaus rolls out this fact with just as much persistence as the funny trappings. So it really hurts to watch Martina Gedeck crying like a castle dog in her bedroom and to see Ulrich Tukur trying to convince himself that he is happy, even though he is actually not. Both actors play better here than they have for a long time. Your chemistry is excellent. "And who takes the dog?" Is further proof that German filmmakers can also be really funny. "
Michael Eckhardt writes in the city magazine Player : “A tabloid comedy at its best, not a minute too long, with pointed dialogues like poison arrows, and the nagging and hissing are countered by more contemplative moments, which is well balanced, as everyone who is in a long relationship knows , this vague fear that nothing is going to happen in life now. Doris recognizes the separation as an opportunity, wants to go into business for herself, a step forward for the still-husband: “Pah! With a construction company for castles in the air? "The no less quick-witted wife comes up with her own ideas, which include a kind of crazy art theft, the table setting even allows a wonderfully trashy moment."
Filmstarts.de says: "Bitterly evil, divorce comedy excellently photographed by Klaus Eichhammer, with which Rainer Kaufmann ties in with his one-time surprise hit" City Talk "and drives the two acting icons Ulrich Tukur and Martina Gedeck to top performances as a couple willing to separate."
