The Degeto Film GmbH (short Degeto , including ARD Degeto ; portmanteau of De funnel Ge Society for To n and picture) is the joint purchasing organization film of the ARD . It is based in Frankfurt am Main on a subsidiary site of the Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) and employs 89 people. Its shareholders are the regional broadcasting corporations of ARD or their advertising subsidiaries.
The chairwoman of the supervisory board has been RBB director Patricia Schlesinger since 2019 (previously Lutz Marmor from 2018 to 2019 ). Ulrich Wilhelm has chaired the shareholders' meeting since 2012.
Tasks in the ARD
ARD Degeto acquires fictional programs for the ARD community program Das Erste , the third programs of the state broadcasting corporations ( BR , HR, MDR , NDR , Radio Bremen , RBB, SR , SWR , WDR ), 3sat , ARTE as well as for One and the other ARD -Saving channels. Procurement of programs takes place through commissioned and co-productions as well as license purchases of feature films, television films and series under editorial responsibility. In addition, Degeto provides contractual and administrative services for ARD co-productions and company acquisitions. She is also responsible for managing the program inventory and making it available for ARD. In 2018, ARD Degeto delivered 737,564 minutes for 10,101 broadcast dates to the programs.
history
The company was founded in 1928 as the German Society for Sound and Film e. V. founded and produced and sold propaganda films for Hitler's Reich government in the 1930s and 1940s . It traded as Degeto-Kulturfilm GmbH from 1937 , and from 1942 as Degeto Film GmbH . After reactivation in 1952 by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hessischer Rundfunk , the company was initially owned by Werbung im Rundfunk GmbH , a subsidiary of the hr, from 1954 and was jointly taken over by the ARD broadcasters in 1959.
Degeto acquires licenses for television programs of all kinds, in particular movies and series, for its shareholders. For this purpose, programs are co-financed, production shares are made, in-house productions are made and synchronizations of foreign productions are commissioned. For this purpose, the Degeto has an annual budget of currently (as of 2017) around 400 million euros from its shareholders.
Degeto was the contractual partner and client for the production of the programs Harald Schmidt from 2004 on Erste and Gottschalk Live in 2012.
Christine Strobl, a lawyer, has been Head of Degeto Film since July 2012 . Former managing directors were Gerhard Schneider (April 2016 to March 2019), Bettina Reitz (May 2011 to May 2012), Hans-Wolfgang Jurgan (July 2001 to November 2011), Jörn Klamroth (May 2002 to March 2011), Klaus Lackschéwitz (July 1994 to December 1999), Peter T. Heimes (July 1988 to September 1994) and Hans-Joachim Wack (1954 to December 1988).

criticism
In media criticism , there was also occasional talk of degetoisation or degotisation . In 2006, for example, the Bundesverband Regie (BVR) complained about the “degetoisation” of television culture at the MDR's director . The Degeto is actually responsible for purchasing film licenses, but has increasingly turned to television production since around 2000. According to the BVR, “the general content and aesthetic flattening of the program is linked to the interests of Degeto, who indirectly work towards a general trivialization and the associated depoliticization of the program.” TV critic Torsten Körner said on the occasion of the award of the Bert- Donnepp Prize 2009: “Instead of people, we see far too often good landscapes, pilcherized valleys and degotized forests”.
In 2005, the FAZ named Degeto as the “secret superpower of kitsch films ”, which arose due to the pressure on quotas by private broadcasters. For example, the ARD television film coordinator Jürgen Kellermeier had "a manifesto drawn up that was approved by the program directors of the other broadcasters in 2000". A film production should therefore be "attractive, entertaining and / or interesting / relevant (if possible, cross-generational)". For titles the requirement was “inviting, appealing, with an attractive and interesting field of association”. "Emotionality" and a narrative style that should be "uncomplicated, simple, clear, in no way confusing" are important. In addition, “main actors with the highest possible level of awareness” are to be used, who have to move in an “attractive, at least interesting, not repulsive environment”. The series Das Traumhotel (2004-2014) is often cited as a negative example in the criticism .
