action

Katja Winzer is a down-to-earth woman and mother. She works as a physiotherapist and lives with her 8-year-old son Tobias and her partner Jürgen Behrendt, who is unemployed and mentally unstable, in a former farm near Bremerhaven.

When Tobias does not come home from playing one evening and broadcasts in the entire circle of friends remain inconclusive, Katja calls in the police. Chief Inspector Roman Maartens, who is about to move into his newly built home with his family, has to break off his vacation. Only he has the appropriate psychological training in his staff to look after family members in such a case. While Katja's life, consisting of waiting, fear and hope, slowly but surely turns into a real nightmare, her novel, in contrast to Jürgen, who is drunk more and more often, stands firmly by one side.

The terrible idea that Tobias could have been the victim of a violent crime becomes a gruesome certainty after one of the largest searches in Germany. The boy's body is found. A man arrested shortly before for the murder of a ten-year-old girl admits - under pressure from Roman Maartens - that Tobias Winzer was also on his conscience. Katja no longer sees any meaning in her life. Roman is more than challenged to keep her from her only way out, suicide. He succeeds, but it remains to be seen whether Katja can ever lead a life worth living again.

Background and production

Anja Wille, author of And still I live on - My life without Felix

The film is based on the case of eight-year-old Felix, who disappeared without a trace on October 30, 2004, triggering one of the largest search operations that ever took place in Germany. He was found sexually abused and murdered after 70 days. Mother Anja Wille recorded the fears, despair and suicidal thoughts, but also the support and hope in her book, which was published in 2007.

Hold the world on is also a title by the German band Glashaus , which appears in Willes' book and is about desperation over the loss of a loved one.

criticism

“Sensitive and sensitively staged psychological drama based on a true incident from 2004, which is based on the autobiographical report of the suffering mother. The film concentrates entirely on the emotional strain on the mother, who hardly manages to come to terms with the traumatic loss. "

- Lexicon of International Films

“Griesmayr's film is primarily characterized by its ruthlessness. The grueling wait at the beginning when Tobias does not return home; the search with hundreds of helpers; the growing assurance of the police that any help will come too late for the boy; the defiant contradiction of the mother, who refuses to admit fate: the book and the director portray all of this in a painfully realistic way.
