The Sea of Women is a German TV film by Jörg Grünler from 2011 . It is the fourth episode of the ARD film series Love at the Fjord , whereby the individual films are linked by the fact that they are set against the backdrop of Norwegian fjords and have romantic melodramas as their content. Floriane Daniel , Muriel Baumeister , Felix Vörtler and Henriette Confurius play the leading roles .

Das Erste recommended the film when it first aired with the following words: “The incomparable fjord landscape of Norway forms the background for this rousing family drama. The interplay between Muriel Baumeister and Floriane Daniel makes the painful conflict between the competing sisters appear credible in every scene. "

action

After 16 years, the fashion designer Marit Gustavsson is returning from London to her Norwegian hometown of Solvorn . At the age of 17 she left her parents and her sister Kristin in an argument. She was considered the black sheep of the family and caused strife in the village with her dissolute love and party life. Marit now wants to put her life in order and make peace with her family. Her parents died in an accident years ago and she finally wants to visit her grave. She doesn't just want to be reconciled with Kristin: under pressure from her parents, Kristin once took care of Marit's daughter when she was still a baby and raised her. Marit took this as an opportunity to leave without a word. She has never seen her 16-year-old daughter Ida since that day.

Kristin is surprised when Marit suddenly stands in front of her on the Norwegian national holiday. Marit claims to have been in the area for work. She only wants to stay in Norway for a few days. Ida's enthusiasm to finally get to know her aunt leads to Marit moving out of the hotel and staying with Kristin and her husband Petter. Kristin fears that Marit could have a bad influence on the pubescent Ida. She also believes that Marit wants to take her child away from her. In fact, Ida begins to skip school, faking a headache and hoping to be covered by Marit, as she used to do the same. Kristin reacts severely. She also forbids Ida's relationship with Ole, who is the same age.

When Ida secretly agrees to meet Ole at a party, Marit does not reveal anything to Kristin. Because both sisters are involved in an argument, Ida can secretly leave the house in the evening. The party will take place at a location on the opposite bank. Ida doesn't manage to get to the boat with her friends in time, so that they set off without her. Ida now tries to catch up with her friends via a parked motorboat. In the middle of the water it turns out that your boat has a leak. It fills with water, to which Ida begins to panic. Meanwhile, Kristin has noticed that Ida is not in her room. She found out about the party from Marit. Determined to get Ida home, she sets off with Marit. The women reach the sinking motorboat just in time and are able to save Ida.

Back at the house, Kristin insists that Marit move out immediately. The loud argument is also about Marit's motherhood and Kristin's self-sacrificing work as an adoptive mother. Ida hears the argument and reacts angry and distressed. She packs her things and flees the house. She wants to hitchhike to Oslo , but changes her mind halfway through. Marit is staying with her former boyfriend Mads for the night and Ida also comes to Mads. She is feverish and stays with Mads and Marit for the next few days. She doesn't want to return home. Although Kristin and Petter are suffering from the situation, they let Ida find her decision. When Ida learns that Marit has to go back to London, she asks if she can accompany her. Marit agrees. She tells Kristin about Ida's decision and Kristin lets her go. At the ferry, however, Marit asks Ida to at least call Kristin and Petter, as she doesn't know when she will see her parents again. It is the phone call that finally changed Ida. She returns to Kristin and Petter and they both welcome her with open arms.

Shortly before leaving, Marit visits her parents' grave. Reconciled with her past, she leaves the place of her childhood and youth.

Audience rating

criticism

“Constructed, problematic (television) women’s film about the difficult rapprochement between two fundamentally different sisters,” wrote the film service . For the TV Spielfilm , Liebe am Fjord - The Sea of Women was a "sweet, unsurprising story, reasonably acted out."

The TV magazine Prisma said, “admittedly”, “Jörg Grünler's story, based on the script by Maria Solrun and Jörg Tensing, is rather greasy” and seems “carefully constructed”. But "the great landscape pictures and the strong camera work by Daniel Koppelkamm hardly left boredom".

Rainer Tittelbach gave the film 3.5 out of six possible stars on his website tittelbach.tv and spoke of a “melodrama with dialogue problems that the remarkable quartet of actors will soon forget”. The critic further wrote: “With the shift of the stereotypical sister conflict to the 16 year old daughter, the film unfolds its emotional strength. Henriette Confurius plays Ida impressively: she carries the film in the second half and makes it an ode to youth. Clear physiognomy and classic beauty in front of a landscape - that is Jörg Grünler's principle in this visually remarkable film. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff dealt with the film on the Kino.de website and came to a similar conclusion as Tittelbach: “Thanks to the leading actresses and the Norwegian fjord landscape, a drama about two sisters fighting for a child.” To director Jörg Grünler's tour the performer gives "once again nothing to complain about". The two main roles are "aptly cast"; Floriane Daniel is currently playing "the stuffy, dark side of the adoptive mother very consistently". Felix Vörtler is a “great addition to Kristin's husband, who tries to mediate again and again”. And "the young Henriette Confurius, who was awarded the German TV Prize twice", is "one of the greatest young talents". Daniel Koppelkamm ensures "with wonderful pictures that the landscape plays the third main role".

Eric Leimann said in the Weser-Kurier that the “tightly staged ARD melodrama 'Love on the Fjord: The Sea of Women' [could] be seen”. Floriane Daniel can be seen there "as a big sister in a love story with almost no men".
