occupation

Wüstenblume is a feature film by German-American director Sherry Hormann and producer Peter Herrmann from 2009. The drama is based on the autobiographical novel and world bestseller of the same name by Waris Dirie , who grew up as a nomad girl in the Somali desert at the age of 13 fled to Mogadishu before a forced marriage with a much older man , discovered years later in a London fast food shop by the star photographer Terence Donavan and became one of the most successful models in the world.

action

Born in the Somali desert, Waris grew up in a constant struggle for daily survival. She was mutilated when she was 3 years old . When she was about to be forced into marriage at the age of 13, she escaped to escape her father's will. She wanders through the desert until she finally reaches the Somali capital Mogadishu. Her mother's family takes her in and gives her a job as a maid in the Somali embassy in London, where she is not allowed to leave the house for years. When this is cleared due to the chaos of war in Somalia, Waris fled again. She goes into hiding in the metropolis, finds a friend and confidante in the lively saleswoman and life artist Marilyn, learns English and works as a cleaner in a fast-food restaurant.

There the star photographer Terence Donaldson discovers them, and the designers scramble for them. The jet set and the press love the nomad girl, who, however, is considered an illegal immigrant due to her expired passport and can only obtain a residence permit through a marriage of convenience after forged papers did not bring the desired success.

Waris Dirie becomes one of the highest paid models in the world. But despite all the success, Waris burdens the secret of her childhood. At the height of her career, she tells in an interview about the cruel tradition of female genital mutilation , of which she herself became a victim as a little girl. The release sparked a wave of compassion and protest and Waris decided to devote her life to fighting this ritual.
