Sally Cecilia Hawkins (born April 27, 1976 in Dulwich , London ) is a British theater , film and television actress .

life and career

Sally Hawkins grew up as the daughter of children's book authors and illustrators Jacqui and Colin Hawkins in South London and went to the James Allen Girls' School in Dulwich . In 1998 she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . She then worked at the theater, for example in the Shakespeare performances Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night's Dream (both 2000).

Hawkins had her first major film role in Mike Leigh's All or Nothing in 2002 . Two years later she starred in Vera Drake , again under the direction of Leighs, opposite Imelda Staunton . In the same year she appeared in Layer Cake . Her television debut was in 2005 with the BBC film Fingersmith . In 2007, she starred with Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell in Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream . Also in 2007 she received the Golden Nymph for Best Actress at the Monte Carlo TV Festival for her role in Adrian Shergold's Persuasion (based on the novel by Jane Austen ). In 2008 she starred in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky . She has won numerous awards for her portrayal, including the Silver Bear at the Berlinale 2008 , the Golden Globe and a nomination for the European Film Prize 2008 . In 2009 she starred in Sherry Hormann's film Desert Flower , in 2010 in Submarine and in 2011 in a remake of Jane Eyre . In Mike Newell's 2012 film adaptation of Charles Dickens ' novel Great Expectations , she took on the role of Mrs Joe . The role of Ginger in Woody Allen's award-winning drama Blue Jasmine in 2013 earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2014 Academy Awards . She starred alongside Cate Blanchett , Alec Baldwin and Peter Sarsgaard .

In addition to her work as an actress, Hawkins also works as a writer for comedy series, such as for the British BBC radio show Concrete Cow .
