Paddington

Paddington 2 is a British-French film comedy by Paul King from the year 2017 . The film, which is based on the children's book character Paddington Bear , is the sequel to Paddington, which was released in 2014 .

action

The 100th birthday of Paddington's aunt Lucy is just around the corner and Paddington has to look for a suitable present. In Mr. Gruber's antique shop he finally finds a special pop-up picture book , which he cannot afford, however. So he takes on various jobs in order to earn the necessary change.

The day before he finally wants to buy the book, he witnesses the book being stolen from Mr. Gruber's shop by a bearded man. Paddington is suspected of the act and arrested and sentenced for lack of evidence that the bearded man existed. In prison, Paddington quickly befriends the initially malicious inmates. The prison chef "Knuckles" McGinty even becomes a good friend of Paddington.

The real thief turns out to be a man named Phoenix Buchanan, an unsuccessful actor who lives across from the Browns. Paddington had told him a few days earlier about the picture book, which had made him very excited. He believes the book is the key to a treasure hidden in London that his grandfather already knew about. So he uses the book and finds various clues in the London landmarks.

Meanwhile, the Browns try to prove Paddington's innocence. They meet a fortune teller who tells them that the author of the stolen picture book was murdered by Buchanan's grandfather many years ago. The author really owned a treasure and incorporated the clues about its hiding place into the book. The Browns quickly find out about Buchanan, who they now recognize as the real thief. Mr. and Mrs. Brown break into Buchanan's house to look for the stolen book. When he unexpectedly comes home, they have to abort the plan without a book.

Meanwhile, Paddington breaks out of prison with three of the other inmates. He contacts the Browns, who tell him that they know the real book thief and that they only have to convict him in order to finally prove Paddington's innocence. They arrange a meeting at Paddington Station . There Paddington gets on board a train that houses the treasure of the picture book. He finds Buchanan on the train and can take the book away from him. Buchanan locks Paddington in a train car and disengages the car from the rest of the train. Finally the carriage with the bear rolls towards a river and sinks into it. At the last moment, however, Paddington is rescued by Knuckles and the other prison inmates, who swim next to him with their getaway plane, and Mrs. Bird manages to overpower Buchanan.

Paddington's innocence is finally recognized. However, after all the exertions he becomes ill and falls into a coma . It wasn't until three days later, on Aunt Lucy's birthday, that he woke up. Since the picture book was confiscated by the police as evidence, Paddington is now without a gift. He is happy to learn that the Browns have arranged that Aunt Lucy herself has come to visit London.

Allusions

Like its predecessor, there are numerous allusions to other films, such as the Umbrella Dance, the Chase on the Train and Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin , whose mustache Paddington wears shortly after the cogwheel scene.

reception

criticism

The film received consistently positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes he had an average rating of 9.2 / 10 from the beginning of November 2017, which was 8.7 at the beginning of March 2018, which was still 100 percent around 192 ratings.

Delay by the Ministry of Culture in Russia

In Russia, the film was withheld by the Ministry of Culture shortly before the premiere. Tickets already sold had to be refunded. The measure due to the Ministry of Culture should serve to give preference to Russian films and curb the influence of foreign culture.

continuation

In June 2016 the managing director of Studiocanal  announced that a third Paddington film would be produced.
