Peter Capaldi (born April 14, 1958 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British actor and film and television director . In 1995 he won the Oscar in the Best Short Film category for his film Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life .

life and career

Youth and education

Peter Capaldi was born in Glasgow. His mother's family is from Killeshandra , County Cavan , Ireland and his father's from Picinisco , Italy . His father put ice ago and sold it in Glasgow with a mobile shop . After leaving school, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art .

During his student days, Capaldi was a singer in the punk rock band The Dreamboys , drummer was the later comedian and presenter of the Late Late Show (CBS, 2005-2014) Craig Ferguson . Capaldi did not make music his profession, but occasionally plays guitar in his films (including his roles as George Harrison and The Doctor ) and performs with musician friends in his free time. He is particularly connected to the band The Blow Monkeys . In January 2018, the band released a YouTube video entitled Jamming with the Dr. , in which Capaldi and lead singer Dr. Robert performs an acoustic version of The Wild River . Capaldi was most recently on stage as an electric guitarist at her concert in Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall in October 2018.

Acting career

Capaldi made his acting debut in Local Hero (1983) and has since appeared in several films and series. In the UK, best known he is for his award-winning role in the BBC -Sitcom The Thick of It as New Labor - spin doctor Malcolm Tucker . In both 2006 and 2008 he was nominated for the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Actor . The character Tucker is said to be loosely based on Tony Blair's right-hand man Alastair Campbell . The associated spin-off film Kabinett out of control (In the Loop) from 2009 also brought Capaldi several nominations and awards. He was appointed as among other Best Actor for the British Independent Film Award nomination in 2009 and was awarded the Chlotrudis Award in 2010 as Best Supporting Actor .

With his role as Secretary of State John Frobisher in Torchwood's third season Children of Earth , Capaldi made a name for himself outside the UK in 2009 for his performance. In 2008 Capaldi was also seen in the British cult television series Doctor Who in the episode The Fires of Pompei (4x02) in a supporting role as a family man. It was the same episode in which Karen Gillan , who later played the first companion of the Eleventh Doctor Amy Pond, was seen in a supporting role.

For Christmas 2010, Capaldi appeared as Balthazar in the four-part BBC miniseries The Christmas Story - The Greatest Miracle of All Time , based on the New Testament story of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth .

Although Capaldi was already seen in an episode of the Doctor Who series , as well as in a leading role in the third season of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood , he became the title character on the BBC on August 4, 2013 as the twelfth reincarnation of the Doctor of the series. This makes him the second actor after Colin Baker , who previously appeared in another role in the television series. He succeeds Matt Smith , who has held the role since 2010. On January 30, 2017, Capaldi confirmed that he would be leaving the series with him as Doctor at the end of season 10 and the third. On July 16, 2017, Jodie Whittaker was presented as his successor.

Authorship and direction

Capaldi wrote Soft Top, Hard Shoulder (1993), which won the Audience Award at the London Film Festival . For his film Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life (1993), which he wrote and also directed, he received the British Academy Film Award for Best Short Film in 1994 and the Oscar for Best Short Film in 1995 . In 2001 he also wrote and directed the film Strictly Sinatra . The film's producer, Ruth Kenley-Letts, was nominated for the 2002 Carl Foreman Award for the Most Promising Newcomer at the BAFTA Film Awards . For the television series Getting On he directed seven of the nine episodes in 2009 and 2010; he also appeared in three episodes as Peter Healy , two of which he also directed. Capaldi also directed the television film The Cricklewood Greats . For this he was nominated for the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy in addition to the producer and the author .

Capaldi also works as a speaker for audio books .

Private life

Capaldi lives with his wife, Elaine Collins, and their daughter (* 1992) in Crouch End , London . He is ambassador for the UK Association for International Cancer Research and the Scottish Aberlour Child Care Trust .
