occupation

The Hour is a British television series starring Ben Whishaw , Dominic West and Romola Garai . It was produced on behalf of the BBC and is about the plans of the BBC to develop a program at the time of the Suez crisis in June 1956 that deals with current affairs. The series consists of two seasons and 12 episodes. The series was first broadcast on July 19, 2011 on BBC Two .

action

In the first season, beginning in the fall of 1956, reporter Freddie Lyon is unhappy with his job producing newsreels for the BBC. Desperate not to be on TV himself, Freddie is unaware that his best friend Bel Rowley has been chosen by her mentor Clarence Fendley to produce a new news magazine called The Hour . Rowley selected veteran war correspondent Lix Storm to take care of the overseas reporting for the program, leaving Freddie to handle the domestic news, a position he finds inferior. For the moderator of the program, Clarence chooses the good-looking and noble-looking Hector Madden. They are supported by Thomas Kish, a mysterious and taciturn translator for the BBC, who helps them report on the Suez Crisis .

While the team is trying to put the show together, Freddie is approached by Ruth Elms, the daughter of a member of the House of Lords who keeps Freddie's mother busy. She asks him if he can investigate the murder of Peter Darrall, a college professor she knew. Soon after, Freddie finds her dead in her hotel room, an apparent suicide .

reception

criticism

The series received mixed reviews. Sam Wollaston of The Guardian expressed his skepticism through a popular comparison with Mad Men , calling the first episode a "slow starter" and "a bit of a mishmash - Drop the Dead Donkey meets Spooks - Targeting MI5, " but said that overall, it contains “enough intrigue to make you want more”. In turn, AA Gill called the series "self-satisfied rubbish" in the Sunday Times with "a script that would shame a Bruce Willis film," and Michael Deacon of the Telegraph described it as "an exercise in scolding the past for failing to live up to the politically correct ideals of the 21st century ”, despite praising Morgan's script and concluding that he“ would not give up The Hour too soon ”. Even so, there was some criticism of the script, which was not sufficiently convincing, and screenwriter Abi Morgan admitted that a few lines didn't work.

When it premiered in the US on BBC America, the series was well received, with Metacritic achieving a Metascore of 81/100 based on 17 reviews .
