history

The hill of Picinisco was probably already populated by Samnites before the area in 293 BC. Was incorporated into the Roman territory. The first mention of a place called Piczinisci was in a deed of donation from March 6, 1017, which the brothers and princes of Capua Pandulf III. and IV. exhibited for the Montecassino Abbey . In 1054 the two counts of the Marserland, Oderisio II. And Rainaldo III., Had a fortification built. King Roger II of Sicily redefined the borders in 1150 and assigned the village to the neighboring town of Atina. From then until 1806 it belonged to the Counts and Dukes of Alvito from the Cantelmo, Cardona and Gallio families. In 1861 the Kingdom of Italy came into being . In 1919 the English writer David Herbert Lawrence , author of novels and short stories, including the well-known Lady Chatterley's lover , visited Picinisco. In the spring of 1944 the place suffered considerable damage in the fighting over the Gustav Line running here , and the emigration reduced the population to a third of the population of 1921. The consequences of the earthquake of May 7th and 11th, 1984 in this area its epicenter has not yet been completely eliminated.

Attractions

  • At the Piazza Ernesto Capocci in front of the entrance to the town center is the Porta di Piazza, a gate with the function of a clock tower.
  • The Church of San Rocco is opposite the porta and was built before 1533 with a different dedication; since 1820 it has been consecrated to St. Lawrence, which is still valid today . After the 1984 earthquake, it was only reopened on June 29, 2006.
  • On Via Rione on the local hill is the wall of the castle with two side towers and a gate, the Porta Rione. Behind it stands a mighty round tower; The stone battlement is largely preserved. The palace of the Counts and Dukes of Alvito from the 16th century joins on the inside on the right. Like the castle as a whole, it has been awaiting thorough renovation since the end of the Second World War.
  • The Collegiata San Lorenzo has been the main church since 1305. It has a baroque facade and a medieval bell tower, which probably previously served as a watchtower. The magnificent three-aisled interior shows the renovation after the earthquake; it contains several altars, a wooden pulpit with inlay work and an organ from 1739.
  • The church of Santa Maria Assunta is at the cemetery. It was the earliest church in the village and served as a people's church (pieve) for the rural population. It was first mentioned in a document from Pope Paschal II from 1110. The facade with a portico of five arcades and the simple interior with round arches and open roof truss testify to the emergence in the Romanesque period .
