history

Alatri was probably founded in the 6th century BC. Founded by the hernics . After Alatri and other localities took part in the Second Samnite War , the hernics were destroyed in 306 BC. Made to be taxable and compulsory subjects of Rome.

Alatri is from the 5th century bishop's residence , now the diocese Anagni combined.

In December 1941 the fascist regime set up a prisoner-of-war camp ( campo di concentramento ) for several thousand civilian internees in Fraschette, in the municipality of Alatri . The first internees were Anglo-Maltese who had been deported from Libya ; they arrived in the fall of 1942. In the months that followed, around 3,000 Yugoslavs from the territories occupied and annexed by Italy and Slavs from the Italian border provinces arrived in Fraschette. Women and children from other camps were gradually moved to Fraschette di Alatri. In the summer of 1943 there were 4,500 internees in the camp. The internees lived in cold wooden barracks. The living conditions were extremely difficult. The hygienic conditions were precarious, simple latrines replaced the missing sewer system; medical care was inadequate; the internees suffered from hunger and tried to round up the scarce daily allowance by selling items they still owned. In 1943 the Swiss Embassy in Rome visited the camp three times. The camp in Fraschette was not closed until April 1944.
