Casalattico is an Italian commune in the Lazio region , Frosinone province in central Italy with 531 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 49 km east of Frosinone and 131 km east of Rome .

geography

Casalattico is located on the northern slope of the Monte Cairo massif above the Melfa valley. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino .

The municipality consists of the districts Casalattico, Macchia, Monforte (formerly Mortale ), Montattico, San Nazario and Sant'Andrea.

The neighboring municipalities are Arpino , Atina , Casalvieri , Colle San Magno , Santopadre and Terelle .

history

Titus Pomponius Atticus had an estate here. This is evidenced by an inscription that says that Pomponius had a road built that connected Montattico with Atina . He is also the namesake of Casalattico (Casale Attico = House of Atticus) and Montattico. The area was badly affected during the Migration Period.

Before the year 1000, the Benedictine monastery of San Nazario was built, presumably over a Roman temple on the banks of the Melfa. At that time the area belonged to the Principality of Capua . The princes Pandulf IV and Pandulf V. each confirmed the possession of San Nazario to the Montecassino monastery .

On September 9, 1349, the municipality was devastated by a severe earthquake.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the San Nazario monastery was abandoned and became a quarry for the surrounding hamlets. In the 19th century the area was a center of brigands . Since the beginning of the 20th century, many residents of the village emigrated to Ireland and started small businesses in the snack bar. As recently as the 1990s, the majority of fish and chip stalls in the Republic of Ireland were run by descendants of immigrants from Casalattico and the surrounding area - a classic example of a chain hike .

In 1927 Casalattico became a municipality in the newly founded province of Frosinone. During the Second World War, the community was completely evacuated because it was on the Gustav Line . After the war, a phase of emigration began until the 1970s. Today the community lives from agriculture and the emerging ecotourism.
