history
After Italy switched sides in World War II , Castro dei Volsci was occupied by the German Wehrmacht . It was captured by Allied forces after the Battle of Monte Cassino and the civilian population fell victim to Allied war crimes. Women were raped en masse and men were murdered. A memorial, the "Mamma Ciociara" in Castro dei Volsci, commemorates the raped women and their daughters. The feature film And Yet They Live by Vittorio De Sica from 1960 recalls these events.
