Fontana Liri is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio with 2813 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 110 km southeast of Rome and 28 km east of Frosinone .

geography

Fontana Liri is divided into the districts of Fontana Liri Superiore and Fontana Liri Inferiore. Fontana Liri Superiore lies on a hill above the Liri valley , while Fontana Liri Inferiore is the main part of the municipality in the valley floor. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle del Liri .

The neighboring towns are Arce , Arpino , Monte San Giovanni Campano , Rocca d'Arce and Santopadre .

Fontana Liri will be connected to the trunk road network with Strada Statale 82 della Valle del Liri , from Avezzano to Itri . There is a railway connection via the Avezzano-Sora-Roccasecca railway .

history

The ancient city of Laterium was believed to be in the area of ​​Fontana Liri Inferiore. Its decline began already in the Roman Empire when it is only referred to as a village belonging to Arpinum. Castello Zupponis , today's Fontana Liri Superiore, was first mentioned in 1006 . In 1269, the castle was expanded by Karl von Anjou as a border fortress and incorporated into the Duchy of Sora . In the 14th century, Gaetano I, Duke of Sora, tried to dam Lake Solfatara and use it for thermal cures. The unsuccessful company probably earned the place the name Fontana (= fountain). In 1892 the Stabilimento Militare Propellenti (gunpowder factory) was founded, as a result of which the Fontana Liri Inferiore settlement developed, which has been the main focus of the community since the Second World War.
