history
In the 4th century BC The Volscians founded an oppidum on the southern slope of Monte Cairo. With the establishment of the Colonie Interamna Lirenas in 313 BC It came under the name of Pesmons under the Roman rule. Villas and country estates were built in the valley floor.
During the Migration Period , the inhabitants withdrew to the old, easily defended place. In 744 the Lombard Duke of Benevento Gisulf II gave the place to the monastery of Montecassino . After it was destroyed by the Saracens in 846, the Counts of Aquino rebuilt Pesmons castle and claimed Piedimonte for themselves. It was not until 1230 that Monte Cassino finally came about and shared its fate until the founding of the Kingdom of Italy . The last battle of the Austro-Neapolitan War also occurred near San Germano in 1815, which led to the re-establishment of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the rule of the Bourbons .
During the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, Piedimonte was completely destroyed. From the 1950s it was rebuilt in a modern way, with the public facilities being relocated from Piedimonte Alta to the valley on Via Casilina. With the settlement of industrial companies (FIAT) Piedimonte experienced an economic boom.
