history

The name Castelnuovo is derived from the castle that Desiderius, Abbot of Montecassino , had built in 1059 on Monte Perano to protect the abbey's land to the south. Until 1806 Castelnuovo belonged to the Terra di San Benedetto and was then incorporated directly into the Kingdom of Naples . After its integration into the Italian national state, the place name of Castelnuovo di Traetto (= Minturno) was changed in 1862 to the new one that has been in effect since then. During the Second World War, Castelnuovo was on the Gustav Line and was badly damaged in the fighting for it. This was followed by a wave of emigration that has only slightly reversed in recent times.
