San Donato Val di Comino is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio with 1985 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 132 km east of Rome and 50 km east of Frosinone .

geography

San Donato Val di Comino is located at the foot of Monte Pezzullo in the Monti della Meta on the state road 509 di Forca d'Acero , which leads from Cassino to Abruzzo . A large part of the municipality belongs to the Abruzzo, Latium and Molise National Park . San Donato Val di Comino is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino .

The place bears the Bandiera Arancione , a seal of quality in the field of tourism and the environment of the Touring Club Italiano (TCI).

The neighboring towns are Alvito , Gallinaro , Opi ( AQ ), Pescasseroli (AQ) and Settefrati

history

A settlement of the Samnites was 293 BC. Destroyed by the Romans . A Roman estate, the remains of which are in the district of San Fedele, can be seen as an indirect successor.

A church, the Aecclesia Sancti Donati , was first mentioned in 778 AD . The Counts of Aquino took the place in their possession and built the Castrum Sancti Donati . San Donato belonged to Aquino until 1806. In 1861 it came to the Kingdom of Italy and received its valid place name a year later.

In 1984 an earthquake caused severe damage.
