Anagni (pronounced: Anánji ) is a town with 21,152 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Frosinone in the Lazio region in the Ciociaria countryside .

Anagni is located on a long hill above the Sacco valley, 66 kilometers southeast of Rome and 22 kilometers northwest of Frosinone .

The city is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici .

The neighboring municipalities are: Acuto , Ferentino , Fumone , Gavignano ( RM ), Gorga (RM), Montelanico (RM), Paliano , Piglio and Sgurgola .

Anagni is located at the Anagni - Fiuggi Terme exit on the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway from Rome to Naples . The Anagni - Fiuggi station , on the Rome – Naples railway line , is seven kilometers from the town center.

history

In ancient times , Anagnia was the chief town of the hernics , who lived in 306 BC Was conquered by Quintus Marcius tremulus for Rome .

Anagni has been a bishopric since the 5th century .

In the Middle Ages , Anagni played an important role as the residence of popes and the place of conclaves . Innocent III resided here . , Gregory IX. , Alexander IV and Boniface VIII. In 1106 Otto von Bamberg was elected Bishop of Anagni by Pope Paschal II in the cathedral against his will. Gregory IX excommunicated at the same place . Frederick II twice (1227 and 1239). Pope Hadrian IV died on September 1, 1159 in Anagni.

On September 7, 1303, Pope Boniface VIII was attacked, beaten and threatened with death by a gang of armed men in his country villa near Anagni. Then the French-speaking captors tried to kidnap the 68-year-old pontiff, but were in turn attacked by the courageous citizens and had to release Boniface after three days. The incident went down in history as the assassination attempt by Anagni . This attack by Anagni marked the beginning of the relocation of the papal residence to Avignon and the epoch of the Avignon papacy .

With the end of the Middle Ages, Anagni lost its importance. In 1556 it was sacked by the Duke of Alba .

Attractions

Anagni has a well-preserved old town with many houses from the 13th to 15th centuries.

  • The Cathedral of Santa Maria is one of the most beautiful Romanesque buildings in Lazio . Most of the cathedral can be traced back to the first construction phase 1077–1104. The transept was built around 1200. Pope Alexander IV consecrated the large hall crypt in 1255 , the important frescoes of which were created between 1231 and 1255 and are still completely intact.
  • Below the cathedral is the papal palace from the early 13th century, in which some large, partly painted halls can be visited.
  • The 13th century Palazzo Comunale , the town hall, has a large arched passage.
  • The Casa Barnekow is a fine example of a residential building from the 14th century.

politics

Carlo Noto (independent) was elected mayor for the second time in June 2009. His center-right alliance also made up the majority in the local council with 12 out of 20 seats. It was first elected in 2006. In early 2008 his coalition broke up and 11 city councilors resigned, which led to new elections in 2009. Fausto Bassetta has been mayor since May 25, 2014.
