Fontechiari is an Italian commune in the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region with 1293 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 120 km southeast of Rome and 38 km east of Frosinone .

geography

Fontechiari is located in the hills of the eastern Ciociaria . The districts of Cisterna and Collemastroianni belong to the municipality. She is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino .

The neighboring towns are Arpino , Broccostella , Casalvieri , Posta Fibreno and Vicalvi .

history

In the 10th century, the place was probably settled by the Montecassino monastery with Slavic immigrants. This is where the medieval name Schiavi comes from . The castle was first mentioned in 937. From then on, Schiavi belonged to the Duchy of Arpino. In 1862, the city was by the known since the 18th century source Fons Clara in Fontechiari renamed.

In 1861 Fontechiari became part of the Kingdom of Italy . In 1927 the Province of Terra del Lavoro joined the newly founded Province of Frosinone.
