Sant'Elia Fiumerapido is an Italian commune in the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region with 5921 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 138 km southeast of Rome and 59 km southeast of Frosinone .

Sant'Elia Fiumerapido is located in the north of the Cassino plain above the Rapido river . The highest point of the municipality is the Monte Bianco (1168 m) in the center of a still completely untouched nature reserve. Sant'Elia is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle del Liri .

The districts are Portella, Olivella and Valleluce.

The neighboring towns are Belmonte Castello , Cassino , Cervaro , Picinisco , San Biagio Saracinisco , Terelle , Vallerotonda and Villa Latina .

history

Numerous archaeological finds prove the settlement of the place since ancient times. The early medieval village of unknown name was destroyed by the Saracens in 866 . In 990 Abbot Mansone had the Montecassino Sant'Elia monastery rebuilt as a fortified place. It got its name from a chapel of the same name in the valley of the Rapido. Sant'Elia remained in the monastery for the next 800 years. Since the 15th century, Sant'Elia has been an important papermaking center, mainly for the needs of Monte Cassino. Paper remained the municipality's most important product until the last paper mill closed in 1960.

Most of the inhabitants fled to the mountains during the Battle of Monte Cassino . Sant'Elia was badly damaged and around 400 dead were left behind. The destruction of the infrastructure led to emigration and emigration .
