history
Acquafondata originated during the late migration of the peoples in the 9th century when the population abandoned the plains and established fortified places on hills that were easier to defend. Since it lay over a lake that was drained in 1901, the name, taken from the Latin aqua fundata , emerged. It was first mentioned in 1032, when the Counts of Venafro donated the place to the Abbey of Montecassino , which kept it in the territory of their Terra di San Benedetto until 1806, when it was re-incorporated directly into the Kingdom of Naples . From 1806 to 1902 Acquafondata was united with Viticuso in one municipality and belonged to the province of Terra del Lavoro in the Campania region . In 1927 the place came to the newly founded province of Frosinone in the Lazio region .
In the 19th century, Acquafondata was a center of brigantism . In the fall of 1943 it suffered severe damage as it was at the center of the fighting for the Gustav Line and was captured by French troops on January 12, 1944. On March 15 of the same year, General Charles De Gaulle pays him a visit. Considerable reconstruction work was necessary after the earthquake in early May 1984.

Attractions
- The Church of San Giovanni Battista was first mentioned in 1182. On the side of the clock tower it has a handsome portal, the inscription of which mentions a redesign from 1621 and a renovation from 1920: both were carried out by members of the local leading family, De Filippis. Since the last renovation after the earthquake in May 1984, the interior has been left in a not completely baroque raw state.
- The baroque chapel of San Rocco was built in 1692 and originally served as a place of worship for plague sufferers outside the village.
- Two towers and a piece of wall are still preserved from the fortifications built around 1020.
- The Palazzo De Filippis opposite the parish church belonged to the most important family in the village.
- On the access road from the west, Strada Provinciale 41, is the small pilgrimage shrine Madonna del Carmine.
- The ruins of a castle can be seen in the medieval district of Casalcassinese. The church of S. Antonio di Padova, built in 1856 in neo-baroque style, stands on the main square.
