history

Archaeological finds show that the hill of Rocca d'Arce was already settled in the Iron Age . The Volscians had a castle here, an Arx , hence the name Arce . 313 BC BC the Romans took the Arx without a fight. In the centuries in the Roman Empire without any external threat, the fortress on the mountain lost its importance, but gained it back during the Migration Period , with the threat to the cities in the plain. The Rocca d'Arce fortress was a base for the local population against the Byzantines , Lombards , Saracens and Normans . Henry VI. took the castle for the Kingdom of Sicily in 1197. It remained in the possession of the Hohenstaufen family until it was conquered by Charles I of Anjou in 1265 . In 1583 Rocca d'Arce came into the possession of the Giacomo Boncompagni family , dukes of Arce and Sora . In 1796 the Duchy of the Boncompagni fell directly to the Kingdom of Naples and became part of the Terra del Lavoro province . In 1927 Rocca d'Arce became part of the newly founded province of Frosinone.
