history
According to legend, the ancient Sgurgola is said to have been founded by soldiers from the slave army of Spartacus who died after the lost battle of Silarius in 71 BC. BC, had fled here. Archaeologically, however, only various Villae Rusticae have been proven. The large, perhaps imperial, so-called Villa Magna was destroyed by Ricimer in the 5th century.
The Castrum Sculcule was first mentioned in 1088 when Pope Urban II subordinated it to the Bishop of Anagni , who in turn gave it to the Conti di Ceccano as a fief. In 1314 Pietro Caetani conquered Sgurgola for his family, who owned it until 1484 when Prospero Colonna took it. The Colonna ruled Sgurgola until 1818. In 1870 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy . In 1927 the province of Rome became the newly founded province of Frosinone.
After the population emigrated in the decades after the Second World War, Sgurgola experienced an upswing again due to the emerging industrialization of the Sacco valley.
