Guarcino is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio with 1538 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 85 km east of Rome and 23 km northwest of Frosinone .

geography

Guarcino is located in the Monti Ernici. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici .

The neighboring municipalities are Alatri , Filettino , Fiuggi , Morino (AQ), Torre Cajetani , Trevi nel Lazio , Trivigliano and Vico nel Lazio .

history

Guarcino was since the 8th century BC. A fortified place of the hernics before it was conquered by the Romans and integrated into their empire under the name Varcenum . They built two great temples for Mars and Apollo .

The connection to Rome remained close until the Middle Ages. Pope Boniface VIII built a palace for his family in the 13th century.

Giuseppe Di Vico was elected mayor in April 2005 and re-elected on March 28, 2010.

tourism

In the municipal area, at 1,800 m above sea level, is the Campo Catino ski area, which is mainly visited by Romans. There is also an astronomical observatory built in 1986 on Campo Catino.

Culinary specialties

The Prosciutto di Guarcino is a ham made exclusively from local pork according to a traditional recipe. Every year in July, the Festa del Prosciutto takes place in Guarcino.
